Canon RF 7-14mm f/2.8-3.5L Fisheye STM Lens Summary
The Canon RF 7-14mm f/2.8-3.5L Fisheye STM is a pro-level ultra-wide fisheye zoom lens for full-frame RF-mount cameras, offering two distinct fisheye perspectives from a single optic. At 7mm it captures a 190° circular fisheye image, while zooming to 14mm delivers a 180° full-frame fisheye view, each with a different creative character.
This RF-mount mirrorless lens is a specialised option that replaces the legacy EF 8-15mm fisheye for DSLR cameras. It features a faster aperture range, wider coverage and lower weight, while adding support for modern hybrid workflows, including 2D 180° VR video capture on select Canon cameras.
With a close focusing distance of 0.15 metres, a compact 476g weight and an integrated rear drop-in filter system, it suits creative stills, action sports, immersive video and VR productions where exaggerated perspectives and controlled distortion create an intentional style.
Canon RF 7-14mm f/2.8-3.5L Fisheye STM Lens in More Detail
Fisheye projection for creative imagery
The lens uses an equidistant fisheye projection, which produces a consistent compression of space from the centre of the frame to the edges. At 7mm, this results in a fully circular image with a 190° angle of view on full-frame cameras. At 14mm, the image fills the frame with a 180° diagonal view, retaining the curved horizon and exaggerated perspective associated with fisheye optics.
This dual behaviour allows a single lens to support both stylised stills and immersive video formats. On compatible EOS R cameras that support Open Gate recording, such as the EOS C50 and R6 Mark III, circular fisheye footage can be converted into 2D 180° VR video using Canon’s EOS VR Utility for immersive content production.
Optical performance and close-focusing
The optical design consists of 16 elements in 11 groups, including five UD elements and two replica aspherical elements. This layout reduces chromatic aberration and maintains clarity across the image, even towards the periphery, where fisheye lenses typically show increased softness.
A minimum focusing distance of 0.15 metres allows subjects to be placed extremely close to the front element, which can increase visual impact and distortion. At 14mm, maximum magnification reaches 0.35x at the centre of the frame, supporting further creative close-ups and spatial exaggeration.
Optical coatings include Canon’s ASC and Super Spectra, which reduce internal reflections and help maintain contrast when shooting into light sources, which is common with ultra-wide perspectives.
Autofocus and stabilisation
Autofocus is driven by a leadscrew-type STM system, with smooth and near-silent focusing. This benefits video capture, particularly when recording ambient sound or performing focus pulls, as focus breathing is kept to a minimum.
The lens supports coordinated image stabilisation when paired with EOS R cameras featuring in-body stabilisation. Under CIPA-2024 testing, combined stabilisation provides up to seven stops of correction at the centre of the frame.
Handling
Despite its specialist optical design, the lens is suitably compact, measuring 76.5mm x 109.4mm when retracted, while the integrated hood protects the front element. L-series weather sealing is applied throughout, with a fluorine coating on the front element to repel dirt and moisture.
A rear drop-in filter system supports Canon clear, variable ND and circular polarising filters. Front-mounted filters are not supported due to the fisheye front element design.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between circular and full-frame fisheye?
Circular fisheye records a round image within the frame, while full-frame fisheye fills the sensor with a curved, ultra-wide perspective.
Can this lens record VR video?
Yes, circular fisheye footage can be converted into 2D 180º VR video using Canon EOS VR Utility on compatible cameras.
Does the lens support image stabilisation?
It supports coordinated stabilisation when used with EOS R cameras that include in-body image stabilisation.
How close can the lens focus?
The minimum focusing distance is 0.15 metres.
What type of autofocus does it use?
It uses a leadscrew-type STM system for smooth and quiet autofocus operation.
Does it accept front filters?
No, filters are supported via a rear drop-in filter system only.

Our Verdict
The Canon RF 7-14mm f/2.8-3.5L Fisheye STM is a specialist lens aimed at photographers and creators who actively want distortion, scale exaggeration and a more immersive perspective. Its ability to switch between circular and full-frame fisheye views within a single zoom makes it more flexible than previous options, while the lightweight build and fast aperture extend its usefulness for video content and low-light handheld shooting.
Support for VR conversion, close focusing and coordinated stabilisation positions it well for modern hybrid workflows, particularly within action sports, video and more experimental imaging. This is not a general-purpose ultra-wide, but for creators who are drawn to fisheye imagery, it offers a highly refined and technically capable option within the RF system.
