Lenses are expensive and valuable to photographers and they need protection. A lost cap or hood can lead to accidental damage whether the lens is being used or stowed away.

It is a great idea to pick up a lens hood if your model was not supplied with one. Hoods not only shade your optics from stray rays of light which can create flare, but they also protect against bumps, scrapes and accidental knocks. This is particularly important with long telephoto models which can easily get knocked around or macro lenses, where photographers get very close to their subjects.

Rear caps are useful when changing lenses. Losing one will require replacement to avoid getting dust into the camera body and potentially onto the sensor. This is prevalent with mirrorless cameras which do not have a mirror to protect the sensor.

For added safety why not consider a lens case or wrap, from leading camera bag manufacturers such as Lowepro, Think Tank, Manfrotto and Peak Design.
