The new Canon EOS M5 presents a marked improvement over its predecessors, the EOS M3 and EOS M10, which it doesn't replace but sits alongside in the EOS-M range. With chunkier grip, fully polycarbonate body, repositioned dials and the pentaprism-like electronic view finder module on top, it's looking a lot more like the EOS DSLR range… which is kind of the point.

The EOS M5 represents a camera capable of near-DSLR performance but in a compact mirrorless camera body. The M5 will shoot 7fps (the same as the 5D Mark IV) for up to 5.3 second thanks to the DIGIC 7 processor, the same processor found in the Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark II.

Not only for taking photos, it will shoot Full HD video at 60p and includes a Time-Lapse movie mode for added creativity.

Headline improvements come in the form of Dual Pixel CMOS autofocusing, 5-axis image stabilisation for improved low light shooting and reduced image shake, and improved Bluetooth and Wi-Fi capability.

All of which means that the EOS M5 is a worthy contender for keen amateurs who are looking for improved image quality without wanting to go to the lengths of buying a full-blown DLSR, and for professionals who are looking for high quality images, manual shooting and RAW images packaged into a body that is easier to hold and far more portable than a traditional DSLR.

This is also a viable candidate for a second camera for Canon DSLR owners which when combined with the included EF-EOS M mount adapter to open up the whole range of existing Canon EF Mount lenses.

High quality images from the brand new 24.2MP APS-C sensor
Dual Pixel CMOS autofocus technology
5-axis image stabilisation
7fps shooting
Full 1080 HD movie mode up to 60p
