Vortex Razor HD 8x42 Binocular Summary
The 8x42 is the widest-viewing and lightest model in the Razor HD family, making it particularly well suited to birdwatching, wildlife and general nature observation. Its 8x magnification provides a broader view than the 10x and 12x configurations, while the compact 42mm body weighs approximately 686g.
A close focus of approximately 1.83m extends its usefulness to nearby birds and other natural details, while 17.5mm eye relief is the longest in the four-model range.

HD Optics and Lens Coatings
The HD Optical System uses selected glass elements and an optical design that reduces chromatic aberration while maintaining resolution, colour fidelity and edge-to-edge sharpness. An APO system uses index-matched lenses to correct colour across the visible spectrum, while Phase Correction coatings improve resolution and contrast through the roof-prism system.
XR Plus anti-reflective coatings are applied to air-to-glass surfaces to increase light transmission, with Vortex Plasma Tech used for coating application and durability.
Magnesium Chassis and Outdoor Protection
A magnesium chassis combines strength with lower weight, while the True Open Hinge construction reduces bulk and provides more space around the barrels for handling. Rubber armour adds a non-slip exterior and additional protection.
Exposed lens surfaces feature ArmorTek, an ultra-hard coating that helps protect against scratches, oil and dirt. Argon-gas purging and O-ring sealing provide waterproof and fogproof performance across changing weather and temperatures, while the binoculars are also constructed for impact resistance.
Focus, Eyecups and Tripod Support
A central focus wheel adjusts both barrels simultaneously, while a locking diopter on the right eyepiece compensates for differences between the user’s eyes. Twist-adjustable eyecups accommodate viewing with or without glasses.
The binoculars are tripod adaptable with a compatible adapter, providing the option of additional support for prolonged observation and particularly with the higher-magnification configurations.
8x42 for a Wider View
Compared with the 10x42, the 8x42 prioritises field of view over subject enlargement. It covers approximately 129m at 1,000m rather than 121m, while eye relief increases from 16.5mm to 17.5mm. Both models share the same approximately 1.83m close-focus distance and external dimensions, with the 8x42 around 17g lighter.
The 8x42 is therefore the stronger choice when a broader view is more useful for finding and following wildlife, while the 10x42 provides greater magnification for observing more distant subjects.

Our used products are subject to wear and tear in comparison to brand new products. This also applies to accessories that are supplied with the camera including batteries which may have a lower optimum performance level/life expectancy.
- Like New – The equipment is in a condition as if you have just bought it from the manufacturer. The item is still considered to be ‘Like New’ even without the original packaging and accessories. The product has been fully tested and is in perfect working order. Lenses are optically clear. There may be light dust present that will not effect the imagery.
- Excellent – The equipment should be close to being ‘Like New’ but there may be some small cosmetic blemishes that lower its grade. The product has been fully tested and is in perfect excellent order.
- Cameras – Should have no marks on the LCD screen
- Lenses – Should have no marks on the elements and optically clear. There may be light dust present that will not effect the imagery.
- Very Good – The equipment may have some slight cosmetic wear to the paintwork and cosmetic blemishes with only light signs of use and the product has been fully tested and is in great working order.
- Cameras – The LCD screen may have small signs of wear that does not affect its display
- Lenses – The mount of the lens will start to show signs of wear
- Good – The equipment is showing more obvious signs of cosmetic wear and blemishes, but the product has been fully tested and is in great working order.
- Cameras – LCD screen may have scratches or wear that is starting to affect the display.
- Lenses – May have slight dust inside that does not affect images. The mount shows signs of use.
- Well Used – The equipment will show significant signs of wear. The paintwork will be coming away in large areas exposing the metal work, but the product has been fully tested and is in great working order.
- Cameras – LCD screen is heavily worn either by de-lamination or has scratches to it. Rubber grips are starting to come away from the body.
- Lenses – The lens has dust inside that may affect images. The rubber zoom/focus ring is coming away from the barrel of the lens.
