Voigtlander 40mm f/2 Septon Aspherical Lens for Nikon Z Mount Summary

The Voigtlander 40mm f/2 Septon Aspherical Lens for Nikon Z Mount is a compact, pancake-style standard prime designed for full-frame mirrorless cameras. It draws its name from the historic Septon lenses developed for Voigtlander SLR systems in the late 1950s and 1960s.

The optical construction includes 7 elements in 6 groups and incorporates an aspherical element based on the Orthometar type design, which is known for short optical length and low distortion. The lens measures 32mm from the mount flange and weighs just 205g for a lightweight addition to mirrorless bodies.

Electronic contacts enable Exif transmission and support in-body image stabilisation and focus assist functions when paired with compatible Nikon Z cameras running current firmware.

Voigtlander 40mm f/2 Septon Aspherical Lens for Nikon Z in More Detail

Optical design

The Septon 40mm f/2 Aspherical uses an optical design with 7 elements arranged in six groups including an aspherical surface derived from the Orthometar type. This layout favours short optical length and low distortion while delivering high image quality across the frame.

The 40mm focal length delivers a 57.3° angle of view on full-frame sensors. This sits between traditional 35mm and 50mm perspectives, offering a natural field of view suited to everyday photography, very similar to human vision.

A 10-blade diaphragm supports smooth defocus and consistent bokeh, with an aperture ring that operates in 1/3-stop increments from f/2 to f/16.

Close focusing

The minimum focusing distance is 0.3m, enabling closer subject framing than many traditional standard primes. The maximum reproduction ratio of 1:5.3 allows for frame-filling compositions with lots of detail.

Electronic communication and stabilisation support

The Nikon Z version incorporates electronic contacts. When paired with compatible Nikon Z bodies running current firmware, it supports:

  • Exif data recording
  • In-body image stabilisation (3-axis)
  • Focus assist via focus point frame colour change
  • Focus assist via peaking
  • Focus assist via magnification button

These features integrate manual focus operation with Nikon’s electronic viewfinder tools.

Construction and handling

The barrel is constructed entirely from metal for rigidity and durability although it weighs just 205g. Overall length measures 32.0mm from the mount flange, with a maximum diameter of 68.3mm. A 52mm filter thread allows the use of standard screw-in filters, and a dome-shaped screw-in metal hood is included.
