Viltrox AF 16mm f/1.8 Lens for L Mount in More Detail
Ultra-wide coverage with advanced optics
At 16mm, the lens provides a 105.6° field of view, which is ideal for capturing expansive landscapes, architecture and night skies. Distortion is controlled to maintain faithful rendering of lines and geometry.
The optical construction uses 15 elements in 12 groups. Four ED elements suppress chromatic aberration and colour fringing, while three aspherical elements reduce distortion and coma. This supports sharp detail from centre to edge and maintains accurate star rendering for night sky photography.
Aperture control
The f/1.8 aperture increases light transmission in low-light conditions, supporting faster shutter speeds and lower ISO settings. Even at an ultra-wide focal length, the aperture also enables shallow depth of field effects, allowing relatively pronounced subject separation within environmental compositions.
A minimum focus distance of 0.27m with 0.1x magnification enables close-range perspectives while retaining broad background context.
Autofocus
An STM stepping motor delivers fast and responsive autofocus with tracking support, including eye and face detection through compatible camera systems. Focus transitions remain smooth, and minimal focus breathing helps preserve framing during focus shifts in video recording.
Controls and professional features
The lens includes two customisable Fn buttons, an AF/MF switch and a click switch for stepped or stepless aperture adjustment. A built-in 0.96-inch colour display shows focus distance, depth of field and aperture data in real time.
A USB-C port supports firmware updates. The non-bulb front element accepts 77mm filters, enabling use of ND, CPL and other standard screw-in filters without specialised holders.
Lens design
The barrel uses magnesium-aluminium alloy die-casting with high-grade dust sealing. The lens is officially certified within the L-Mount Alliance and uses the native L Mount communication protocol, supporting autofocus, Eye/Face detection, EXIF transmission and advanced camera control functions across compatible Leica, Panasonic and Sigma bodies.
