Tamron 50-400mm f/4.5-6.3 Di III VC VXD Lens for Sony E in More Detail

Compact and lightweight design

Also referred to as Model A067, the latest 50-400mm f/4.5-6.3 Di III VC VXD lens from Tamron measures around the same size as standard 100-400mm lenses for Sony, yet offers an extra 50mm at the wide end. This creates an extremely versatile solution for a variety of uses where size and weight are an important consideration.

An optical formula with special lens elements delivers unparalleled high performance across all focal lengths, despite its compact and lightweight properties, making this a great choice for amateurs through to professional creators. A compact 67mm filter thread enables you to add lower cost and easily obtainable lens filters, which are the same size as many other Tamron lenses, such as the 28-75mm F/2.8 Di III VXD G2 Lens and 70-180mm F/2.8 Di III VXD.

Harness the latest lens technology

Experience extremely quiet and responsive AF with Tamron’s VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) linear motor focus mechanism. A proprietary image stabilisation mechanism VC (Vibration Compensation) is also included, ensuring the lens delivers versatile capabilities for numerous shooting scenarios.

Macro capabilities

Capture 1:2 macro shots at the wide end (50mm)  with an MOD (Minimum Object Distance) of 25cm. This provides yet more opportunities to capture diverse images with a single all-in-one lens and bring it to any shoot.

Enhanced ergonomics and faster workflow

Tamron has updated the exterior design of the 50-400mm f/4.5-6.3 lens with new improved texture and better operation. A Connector Port for the dedicated Tamron Lens Utility is also available, together with a new ‘Focus Limiter’ function for quicker subject acquisition, which will be added through firmware updates. Using the ‘Tamron Lens Utility’ you can update firmware and customise Tamron lenses by connecting the lens from its Connector Port via the optional Tamron Connection Cable.

Looking to sell your Tamron 50-400mm f/4.5-6.3 Di III VC VXD Lens for Sony E?

Our Verdict

Tamron has a rich history in creating innovative, fully featured lenses for Sony mirrorless camera users, with a series of new and updated lenses arriving regularly. The full-frame 50-400mm f/4.5-6.3 Di III VC VXD Lens continues this trend, sporting a unique focal range with 8x zoom ratio from a very useful 50mm through to super telephoto 400mm. This provides an excellent alternative to the more standard 100-400mm, particularly as the wide end offers 1:2 macro capabilities. This allows you to bring a single all-in-one optic when heading on a range of assignments, and also when travelling.

Quality throughout the zoom range is pleasingly high, with consistent results delivered whether handholding or shooting from a tripod or monopod. Handholding is eminently possible thanks to a combination of low weight, excellent ergonomics and the inclusion of Tamron’s proprietary Vibration Correction system.

Focusing is quick and quiet with VXD technology working seamlessly with Sony AF systems, which is ideal when shooting subjects including people, wildlife and vehicles. The lens has been designed to offer updates and customisation through Tamron’s lens utility. Outdoor shooters will appreciate the moisture-resistant design as well as front element Fluorine coating for easy maintenance. If you’ve been considering a long lens and want a versatile all-in-one solution to capture a diverse range of subjects, look no further than this 50-400mm f/4.5-6.3 Di III VC VXD Lens from Tamron.
