Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD Lens for Canon RF Mount Summary
The Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD brings one of Tamron's most popular APS-C zoom lenses to Canon RF mount cameras. Covering an equivalent focal range of approximately 27-112mm, it spans landscapes, travel, street photography, portraits and video with a constant f/2.8 aperture throughout the zoom range.
Optical stabilisation, close focusing and quiet autofocus make it well suited to both stills and video, while its compact size keeps APS-C mirrorless kits manageable. For Canon EOS R-series APS-C users, it offers an alternative to carrying multiple lenses while retaining the light-gathering benefits of a fast aperture zoom.
Overview And Key Improvements
This version of the 17-70mm f/2.8 brings Tamron's established APS-C standard zoom to Canon RF mount for the first time. Canon users gain access to a lens that combines a broader zoom range than many APS-C f/2.8 standard zooms with Tamron's VC stabilisation system, close focusing capability and RXD autofocus motor. Dedicated Canon RF features include physical AF/MF and VC On/Off switches on the lens barrel, along with support for firmware updates through Tamron Lens Utility.
Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD Lens for Canon RF Mount In More Detail
Useful Everyday Zoom Range
The 17-70mm focal length covers a broad range of subjects in a single lens. Wide-angle settings suit landscapes, architecture and travel photography, while the longer end provides a natural perspective for portraits, events and tighter framing. On Canon APS-C cameras the lens delivers an equivalent field of view of approximately 27-112mm.
Constant f/2.8 Aperture
A constant f/2.8 aperture remains available throughout the zoom range, providing consistent exposure settings while zooming and greater control over depth of field than variable-aperture kit lenses. The nine-blade diaphragm also helps produce smooth out-of-focus areas when photographing subjects at closer distances.
VC Image Stabilisation
Tamron's VC stabilisation system helps reduce the effects of camera shake when shooting handheld, useful in lower light conditions, when recording video or when working at the longer end of the zoom range where movement becomes more noticeable.
Close Focusing
The lens focuses as close as 0.19m at the wide end, allowing photographers to fill the frame with smaller subjects and create images with strong foreground emphasis. This suits food photography, travel details, products and creative close-up compositions.
Autofocus For Stills And Video
The RXD autofocus system provides quiet operation suitable for both photography and video capture. Tamron states that focus breathing has been suppressed, helping maintain a more natural field of view when adjusting focus during recording.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this lens compatible with full-frame Canon RF cameras?
It’s designed for Canon APS-C mirrorless cameras. While it can physically mount on full-frame RF bodies, the lens is built for the APS-C sensor format and image circle.
What is the equivalent focal length on a Canon APS-C camera?
With Canon’s 1.6x crop factor, the 17-70mm focal length provides an equivalent field of view of approximately 27-112mm, covering wide-angle through to short telephoto perspectives.
Does this lens work for video as well as stills?
Yes. The RXD autofocus motor operates quietly and Tamron has suppressed focus breathing, helping maintain a more consistent angle of view when adjusting focus during recording.
How close can I focus with this lens?
The minimum focusing distance is 0.19m at the wide end, allowing you to fill the frame with smaller subjects such as food, products and travel details.
Is the constant f/2.8 aperture useful for low-light photography?
Yes. Unlike variable-aperture kit lenses, f/2.8 remains available throughout the zoom range, helping maintain faster shutter speeds and providing greater control over background blur.
Can I update the lens firmware?
Yes. Firmware updates are supported through Tamron Lens Utility. Canon RF Mount versions also include dedicated AF/MF and VC On/Off switches on the lens barrel.
