Tamron 16-30mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 Lens for Sony E Summary
The Tamron 16-30mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 Lens for Sony E is a second-generation ultra wide-angle zoom for full-frame mirrorless Sony alpha cameras, which offers an expanded field of view over its 17-28mm predecessor, while remaining compact and lightweight. With an updated design and refined ergonomics, this versatile ultra-wide zoom is perfect for subjects such as environmental portraits, landscapes, architecture, travel, interiors and video.
The new G2 version incorporates Tamron’s high-performance VXD linear motor, which is proven to deliver fast and quiet autofocus for both stills and video, while being fully compatible with Sony’s subject detection and tracking systems. The 16-30mm f/2.8 lens features enhanced close-up capabilities and exceptional optical quality with sharp, high resolution details rendered across the entire frame.
At just 440g and only 101.8mm long, it’s an easy zoom lens to bring to remote or distant locations and it sits well on smaller-sized Sony mirrorless bodies. The addition of Tamron Lens Utility™ software support provides customisation for stills and video creators who shoot with Sony mirrorless lenses.
Along with the 28-75mm f/2.8 and 70-180mm f/2.8, this lens completes Tamron’s fast f/2.8 G2 trinity (referred to as Daisangen), which cover popular focal lengths from 16-180mm with consistent performance, uniformity and handling across all three. Whether you’re a content creator, photography enthusiast or a working professional, the 16-30mm f/2.8 G2 delivers superb performance in a portable size for all sorts of wide angle subjects.

Tamron 16-30mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 Lens for Sony E in More Detail
Compact Ultra-Wide Zoom with Fast f/2.8 Aperture
This second-generation Tamron 16-30mm f/2.8 G2 adds even more versatility for Sony mirrorless users, particularly when capturing landscapes, interiors and architectural subjects. This begins with a wider field of view than the 17-28mm predecessor, and an expansive 107° FOV at the wide end of the zoom range. Despite the coverage, the lens is extremely portable at just 440g for Sony E-mount (or 450g for Nikon Z), with a compact barrel that measures just over 10cm.

High Optical Quality for High-Resolution Sensors
The optical construction features 16 elements in 12 groups, including specialist glass to help control distortion and render edge-to-edge sharpness. The fast f/2.8 maximum aperture produces natural-looking blur and gathers plenty of light if shooting handheld subjects in low-light. Close-focusing is as little as 19cm at the ultra-wide 16mm end, opening up creative opportunities for close-up shots, products and interiors.
Enhanced AF Performance with VXD Motor
Tamron’s linear VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) motor ensures accurate, near-silent autofocus for both stills and video. It performs reliably when tracking moving subjects and benefits from fast response and minimal focus breathing. Focus performance is a noticeable improvement over the previous generation, enabling creators to keep pace with high-performance mirrorless cameras.

Intuitive Handling and Unified 67mm Filters
The G2 design features subtle ergonomic enhancements, including a more refined finish and updated grip textures on the zoom and focus rings. It feels solid in the hand despite being lightweight and offers smoother operation, particularly when manually focusing or adjusting framing manually. A compact 67mm front filter thread matches Tamron’s other f/2.8 G2 zooms, which allows you to share filters across kit.
Customisable with Tamron Lens Utility
Like most recent Tamron lenses the 16-30mm f/2.8 G2 is compatible with Tamron Lens Utility software (via optional cable), which allows you to customise functions for photo and video. This includes setting a custom focus preset, adjusting focus ring behaviour, and switching between linear and non-linear MF response.

Our Verdict
The Tamron 16-30mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 improves on the success of its predecessor with a wider field of view, faster focusing, and a more refined design, making it a great choice for Sony photographers and content creators. The lens spans an ultra-wide to wide zoom range, which is especially popular for landscapes, architecture, interiors, and other genres of creative photography.
Despite the constant f/2.8 aperture and optical design, the lens is very compact and portable at just 440g, with a 67mm filter thread that is shared across Tamron’s G2 trinity. That makes it easy to share common filters and accessories, whether shooting stills or video.
Image quality is excellent across the whole frame, with high resolution and well-controlled distortion for demanding wide-angle subjects. Autofocus is handled by the addition of Tamron’s fast and quiet VXD motor, which performs well in photo and video. Close-up performance is also excellent, with a minimum focus distance of just 19cm at the wide end for greater creative flexibility to get super close to your foreground.
A moisture-resistant design and fluorine coating provide reliability in the field, which is essential when shooting landscapes and similar outdoor subjects. Anyone who wants a professional-level wide-angle zoom without the size or price of alternatives should have this high on their comparison list.
