Sigma 65mm f/2 DG Contemporary Lens Silver for L Mount Summary

Finished in a classic anodised silver, the Sigma 65mm f/2 DG Contemporary Lens for L Mount offers a unique combination of portability, optical quality and styling. It provides full-frame coverage with a flattering short telephoto perspective, which is an ideal focal length for portraits, weddings, street and travel photography where a natural look is preferable.

With a slightly longer reach than a standard 50mm and less compression than an 85mm, this 65mm prime creates well-proportioned images that highlight the subject without detaching them from their environment. The wide f/2 aperture enables low-light shooting and background separation, while the lens is highly portable at 405g and 74.7mm long.

As with all lenses in Sigma’s Contemporary series lenses, the 65mm f/2 features a precision-milled all-metal body, complete with tactile control rings and a magnetic front cap for easy handling. Its optical design incorporates 12 elements in 9 groups, including two aspherical and one SLD element, for consistent sharpness and minimal distortion or aberration across the frame.

Manufactured in Aizu, Japan, this lens is practical and stylish, while being suited to hybrid content creators, and photographers who enjoy a more tactile shooting experience, as well as anyone looking for a beautifully built short telephoto with distinctive performance and a refined silver design.

Sigma 65mm f/2 DG Contemporary Lens Silver for L Mount in More Detail

Balanced Optics and Creative Reach

The Sigma 65mm f/2 DG Contemporary Lens delivers detailed results from a short telephoto focal length that sits between 50mm and traditional 85mm portrait lenses. It provides a 36.8° angle of view, which renders a slightly compressed perspective, that’s ideal for lifestyle portraits, headshots, and events, while creating natural low distortion results.

Thanks to its bright f/2 maximum aperture, the lens allows users to create background separation and shoot handheld in low-light. The optical design includes 12 elements in 9 groups, with two aspherical elements and one SLD element. This helps to maintain high levels of sharpness across the frame, reduce chromatic aberration in high contrast areas, and limit vignetting even wide open at f/2.

Image quality is crisp and consistent from the centre to the corners of the frame, and colour rendition is accurate and well balanced. The rounded 9-blade diaphragm produces smooth bokeh, further enhancing its suitability for portraiture and creative work where the subject is separated from background distractions.

Portable with high build quality

At just 405g, the 65mm f/2 lens is the heaviest lens in Sigma’s Contemporary series, but still highly portable when compared to larger alternatives. It’s 225g lighter than the 85mm f/1.4 DG DN Art, making it a great option for users who require a lightweight short tele prime with great image quality.

Its metal build is made of machined aluminium parts, giving the lens a premium feel with long-term durability. The focus and aperture rings are knurled for grip and tactile response, while a dedicated aperture ring enables manual aperture control, with the option to switch to Auto for camera adjustment.

A dust and splash-resistant mount with rubber sealing is ideal for shooting outdoors on location, and the included accessories enhance ease of use and appeal.

Popular focal length with Photographers and Filmmakers

This lens is not only well-suited to stills but also a great choice for video recording. The 65mm focal length is commonly favoured by cinematographers for close framing with natural compression. Its fast aperture and smooth focus operation is ideal for narrative and documentary style productions.

Made in Aizu, Japan

As with all Sigma Contemporary lenses, the 65mm f/2 is designed, manufactured, and assembled at Sigma’s Aizu facility in Japan. This integrated approach ensures high-quality production standards and consistency across the range, supported by decades of lens-making expertise.
