Sigma 50mm f/2 DG Contemporary Lens Black for L Mount Summary
The Sigma 50mm f/2 DG Contemporary Lens Black for L Mount is a compact full-frame standard prime from Sigma’s Contemporary series of mirrorless lenses. It features a classic 50mm focal length, which supports a wide range of everyday photography, including portraits, lifestyle, street, and general shooting, with a natural perspective that suits both people and scenery.
This lens combines a bright f/2 aperture with a small size, keeping weight low while delivering strong optical performance across the entire frame. An all-metal construction, mechanical aperture ring, and internal focusing system give it a solid, reassuring feel, which is far smaller and lighter than professional prime lenses. Finished in black, it offers a discreet alternative to the silver version and fits perfectly with modern L Mount camera bodies.
As one of Sigma’s DG mirrorless lineup, the lens is exclusively for mirrorless systems. It suits photographers and hybrid creators who want a quality standard prime with consistently high image quality, easy handling, and a compact size that is ideal as an everyday lens.

Sigma 50mm f/2 DG Contemporary Lens Black for L Mount in More Detail
Image quality
The optical design of the Sigma 50mm f/2 DG Contemporary renders good performance across the frame while keeping the lens compact. Sharpness is consistent from the centre to edges, which is suitable for subject-focused work and scenes where background details should be sharp. Chromatic aberration is well controlled, and contrast is high across a range of lighting conditions, including backlit situations.
At wider apertures, the lens delivers smooth tonal transitions with clean background rendering. Out-of-focus areas appear natural, helping subjects stand out without harsh edges or distracting highlights. Stopping down increases clarity while preserving a natural look, making the lens useful for shallow depth-of-field subjects and detailed scenes.
Autofocus performance
Autofocus is driven by a stepping motor, with quiet and predictable focus transitions for stills and video. The internal focusing system keeps the lens length fixed, which helps maintain balance on smaller mirrorless bodies and avoids shifts when shooting stabilised. Manual focus is smooth and linear, allowing precise adjustments when shooting manually and during filming.
A physical AF/MF switch allows quick changes and accuracy is consistent from close and distant subjects, which supports a range of shooting styles from spontaneous capture to deliberate framing.
Video characteristics
For video, the combination of internal focusing and moderate weight makes the lens easy to work with on gimbals and rigs. Focus breathing is manageable for everyday filming, and the aperture ring allows exposure adjustments from the lens barrel. Its size and balance also make it comfortable for handheld video on any L Mount camera.
Handling and controls
The metal barrel, rings, and hood contribute to a durable feel without adding unnecessary size, making it comfortable for extended shooting sessions. The black finish also provides a low-profile appearance suited to both professional and casual use.
A weather-sealed mount adds reassurance outdoors, and the control layout matches other Sigma Contemporary primes, making it easy to switch between lenses without adjusting handling habits.
