Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Contemporary Lens For L Mount Summary

With every new release we are reminded of why we love Sigma lenses so much. This is reinforced with the latest full frame L mount offering, which arrives as the Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Contemporary Lens. Sigma has ported technology from their equivalent high-end Art lens into a more affordable, more compact and lightweight design under the Contemporary name. This allows photographers to bring a light zoom to any occasion thanks to the versatile focal width which is suitable for so many subjects. Photographers who shoot outdoors for landscapes or city scenes will love this model because of the weather resistance. Anyone who captures portraits or other subjects where pin sharp details blend against creamy bokeh will appreciate the bright f/2.8 rounded 9-blade aperture, which delivers all of that and excellent low light capabilities.

Features at a glance

  • Compatible with SIGMA USB DOCK UD-11 for L-Mount
  • High quality polycarbonate design with durable brass bayonet mount
  • Fast stepping motor for high speed autofocus systems
  • Advanced optics include 16 elements in 12 groups, with 2 FLD, 2 SLD and 3 aspherical elements
  • Sharp, detailed results with minimal flare, ghosting or chromatic aberrations
  • Nano Porous Coating, Super Multi-Layer Coating and water and oil repellent coating on the front element
  • Dust and splash-proof design with lens barrel controls such as a focus mode switch

Not only is 28-70mm a versatile range in itself, but the 19cm close focus ability of this model allows for yet more creativity with dynamic compositions, particularly at the wide end of the zoom.

Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Contemporary Lens For L Mount in More Detail

L mount lenses are appearing rapidly with Sigma developing a number of high quality options including this Contemporary 28-70mm zoom. Their extensive experience in designing optics over many years allows them to release competitively priced and very competent alternatives which deliver excellent results.

The portability of this lens was a primary design concern resulting in the use of lightweight but ultra strong TSC polycarbonate (Thermal Stable Composite). This ensures continued durability even in the coldest temperatures whilst remaining as strong as aluminium and makes it one of the very lightest options in its class.

Lens rings offer users a precise action with a high-quality premium feel and provide useful lens barrel control including focus mode options.

A compact 67mm filter thread makes it cost effective to add lens filters such as polarisers and UV glass. These serve to improve images under certain conditions as well as protect the front element from damage (see below for Sigma filter options).

Looking to sell your Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Contemporary Lens For L Mount?

Our Verdict

There’s a lot to like about the Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Contemporary Lens for Leica and Lumix photographers. It is extremely light at just 470g and measures just 72.2mm x 101.5mm, which is very compact for a full frame option. This makes for the perfect ‘bring anywhere’ zoom that also gives a versatile focal range along with excellent image results. The inclusion of several high quality glass elements does a lot of clever stuff to reduce aberrations and other image degrading artefacts. This results in photographs that are rendered beautifully, with sharp details from edge to edge as well as throughout the range.

Users who employ Autofocus benefit from a single quick stepping motor which does an admirable job of keeping up with moving subjects. The focus motor is also near silent which is particularly useful if recording movies. Combining technology from premium Art series lenses with the portability of Contemporary models provides users with a very useful, high quality and premium feeling lens, without the accompanying price tag. The result is a desirable option for users who love to travel light but still make the most of their high quality full frame sensors.
