Sigma 17-40mm f/1.8 DC Art Lens for Sony E-Mount Summary

The Sigma 17-40mm f/1.8 DC Art Lens for Sony E-Mount is a wide aperture standard zoom lens, which Sigma has designed exclusively for APS-C format mirrorless cameras such as the Sony A6700, and A6400. It offers a full-frame 25.5-60mm equivalent zoom range covering a versatile variety of subjects, while being extremely lightweight and portable. This allows you to capture anything from wide-angle subjects like buildings, interiors and landscapes, to portraits, travel and video clips.

With a constant f/1.8 aperture throughout the range, this Sigma lens provides excellent control over depth of field with good background separation, and performs extremely well in low-light. It is particularly suited to hybrid content creators who need high optical performance for both stills and video, with an optical design that delivers high resolution and good contrast across the frame. Users will also find minimal distortion and excellent control of flare and ghosting thanks to Sigma’s proprietary lens coatings.

It weighs only around 535g, while being compact for its class, and includes a 67mm filter thread, which is convenient for those already invested in 67mm lens filters or filter systems. An internal zoom mechanism keeps the barrel length consistent during zooming, which makes it easier to balance if shooting with a gimbal or video rig. The lens also includes a de-clickable aperture and well controlled focus breathing for videography.

Sigma 17-40mm f/1.8 DC Art Lens for Sony E-Mount in More Detail

Constant aperture zoom lens with Prime Performance

The Sigma 17-40mm f/1.8 DC Art offers image quality comparable to a prime lens across the entire zoom range. It maintains an f/1.8 maximum aperture throughout, allowing for excellent low-light control with strong background separation.

Four high-precision aspherical and four SLD elements help to reduce axial chromatic aberration and sagittal coma flare, providing high resolution and accurate detail, even when shooting wide open.

Expanded Zoom Range with APS-C Coverage

Compared to the well-known 18-35mm f/1.8 Art, this updated lens extends the wide end to 17mm and reaches 40mm at the telephoto end. The result is a more versatile 25.5-60mm full-frame equivalent range, allowing you to capture everything from landscapes to portraiture without needing to switch lenses.

Improved Handling with Lighter, More Compact Design

The 17-40mm f/1.8 is significantly lighter and more compact than its predecessor. It weighs around 535g and is compatible with 67mm threaded lens filters. The zoom also benefits from an inner zoom mechanism, so the barrel length stays constant during zooming and focusing, which improves balance on gimbals while helping to protect the lens from dust and moisture intrusion.

Lens Coatings and All-Weather Construction

Flare and ghosting are minimised thanks to the use of Sigma’s Super Multi-Layer Coating, which helps to maintain contrast and clarity in backlit conditions. A dust and splash-resistant structure also adds durability, with a water and oil-repellent coating on the front element for easier cleaning after shooting outdoors.

Optimised Autofocus and Focus System

The lens uses Sigma’s well known HLA (High-response Linear Actuator) to deliver fast, quiet and precise autofocus. This is ideal for both video and stills, especially when used on a gimbal or with eye or face detection tracking. Focus breathing is reduced too, enabling consistent framing when pulling focus during video.

Lens Barrel Controls

An aperture ring is included for exposure control, with de-click via a switch to allow smooth, silent adjustment while recording video. A separate lock switch prevents accidental changes to the aperture during shoots. The lens also includes two AFL buttons (assignable on compatible bodies) and a manual focus switch for quick changes while shooting.

Additional Features

  • Each lens is individually tested using Sigma’s proprietary MTF measuring system

Looking to sell your Sigma 17-40mm f/1.8 DC Art Lens for Sony E-Mount?

Our Verdict

The Sigma 17-40mm f/1.8 DC Art for Sony E-Mount features an unusually fast constant aperture along with a very useful focal range for crop-sensor mirrorless cameras. On any crop sensor body like the Sony A6700, it provides a 25.5-60mm equivalent view, which is a good range for day-to-day photography, video, and any situation that benefits from having some zoom versatility without needing to switch lenses.

Despite being a zoom, Sigma’s optical design delivers image quality, which is on par with prime lenses, allowing you to bring just one lens that covers three or four individual primes. Similarly, although it has a wide aperture, the lens is compact and lightweight at around 535g, with a 67mm front filter thread, enabling compatibility with widely available filters without step-up rings or expensive glass.

Focus breathing is well controlled, and the internal zoom mechanism provides consistent handling, which is key for hybrid stills and video content creators. Some photographers and videographers will appreciate the physical aperture ring which is de-clickable and has a lock switch, and there are two AFL buttons, and a well-damped manual focus ring. Images show minimal chromatic aberration, edge-to-edge sharpness and low distortion, ensuring that this lens holds up well for high-resolution stills and cinematic video recording.

With a dust and splash-resistant design, and water and oil-repellent coating, the 17-40mm f/1.8 DC Art lens is a great option for anyone who wants a premium Art Series zoom lens for their APS-C kit.
