Sigma 17-40mm f/1.8 DC Art Lens for Fujifilm X-Mount Summary
The APS-C format Sigma 17-40mm f/1.8 DC Art Lens for Fujifilm X-Mount is a fast standard zoom for X Series cameras such as the X-T5 and beautifully designed X-E5. It delivers a versatile 25.5-60mm full-frame equivalent range, which is suitable for a wide variety of subjects including landscapes, portraits, events, and video content. With a constant f/1.8 aperture across the zoom range, this Fujifilm X lens provides excellent control over depth of field, with consistent exposure, and great light-gathering for low-light situations.
The optical construction includes 17 elements in 11 groups, with four aspherical and four SLD elements that maintain sharpness, minimise chromatic aberration and suppress distortion. An internal zoom design keeps the lens balanced when handheld or mounted on a rig or gimbal, while the compact size and low 535g weight make it a good option for creators who shoot both stills and video.
Autofocus is powered by Sigma’s HLA (High-response Linear Actuator), which delivers fast and silent AF performance. Videographers also benefit from minimal focus breathing, a de-clickable aperture ring, and aperture ring lock. Lastly the 67mm filter thread adds compatibility with common filter systems, rounding off a feature set for hybrid creators who shoot with Fujifilm’s compact crop-sensor bodies.

Sigma 17-40mm f/1.8 DC Art Lens for Fujifilm X-Mount in More Detail
Constant aperture zoom lens with Prime Performance
The Sigma 17-40mm f/1.8 DC Art offers image quality comparable to a prime lens across the entire zoom range. It maintains an f/1.8 maximum aperture throughout, allowing for excellent low-light control with strong background separation.
Four high-precision aspherical and four SLD elements help to reduce axial chromatic aberration and sagittal coma flare, providing high resolution and accurate detail, even when shooting wide open.
Expanded Zoom Range with APS-C Coverage
Compared to the well-known 18-35mm f/1.8 Art, this updated lens extends the wide end to 17mm and reaches 40mm at the telephoto end. The result is a more versatile 25.5-60mm full-frame equivalent range, allowing you to capture everything from landscapes to portraiture without needing to switch lenses.
Improved Handling with Lighter, More Compact Design
The 17-40mm f/1.8 is significantly lighter and more compact than its predecessor. It weighs around 535g and is compatible with 67mm threaded lens filters. The zoom also benefits from an inner zoom mechanism, so the barrel length stays constant during zooming and focusing, which improves balance on gimbals while helping to protect the lens from dust and moisture intrusion.
Lens Coatings and All-Weather Construction
Flare and ghosting are minimised thanks to the use of Sigma’s Super Multi-Layer Coating, which helps to maintain contrast and clarity in backlit conditions. A dust and splash-resistant structure also adds durability, with a water and oil-repellent coating on the front element for easier cleaning after shooting outdoors.
Optimised Autofocus and Focus System
The lens uses Sigma’s well known HLA (High-response Linear Actuator) to deliver fast, quiet and precise autofocus. This is ideal for both video and stills, especially when used on a gimbal or with eye or face detection tracking. Focus breathing is reduced too, enabling consistent framing when pulling focus during video.
Lens Barrel Controls
An aperture ring is included for exposure control, with de-click via a switch to allow smooth, silent adjustment while recording video. A separate lock switch prevents accidental changes to the aperture during shoots. The lens also includes two AFL buttons (assignable on compatible bodies) and a manual focus switch for quick changes while shooting.

Our Verdict
The Sigma 17-40mm f/1.8 DC Art for Fujifilm X-Mount is a fast, constant aperture zoom for X Series creators, which covers a highly usable 25.5-60mm equivalent range. This gives you the flexibility to shoot a mixture of wide-angle shots to short tele subjects like portraits without switching lenses, while still maintaining the look and performance of large-aperture primes. Its f/1.8 maximum aperture helps when shooting handheld in low light, along with rendering a shallow depth of field when desirable.
The build quality is up to Sigma’s premium Art Series standards, with a dust and splash-resistant design and a front element that repels water and oil. An internal zoom mechanism makes the lens easy to use with a gimbal or cage, and the updated optical design supports high-resolution sensors with sharp, high contrast results and negligible chromatic aberration. Videographers benefit from smooth manual focus, a clickless aperture option, and well-suppressed focus breathing, helping to deliver professional-looking footage with ease.
The lens weighs just 535g and uses standard 67mm filters, pairing well with compact Fujifilm bodies like the brand-new X-E5, while offering advanced creative potential for all sorts of creators. For stills or hybrid content, the 17-40mm f/1.8 DC Art is an appealing alternative to carrying multiple fast primes.
- Designed for Fujifilm X mount APS-C format cameras, with a fast constant aperture and compact size
- High resolving power with well controlled chromatic aberration and good sharpness even at wide apertures
- Ideal for hybrid users who need a single versatile zoom lens for photos, video, and hybrid content creation
- Sigma’s optical coatings control flare and ghosting for punchy, high-contrast results even when shooting into sunlight
- Great choice for video thanks to smooth aperture changes, minimal focus breathing and a de-clickable aperture ring
