Sigma 14mm f/1.4 DG Art Lens for Sony E Summary

The Sigma 14mm f/1.4 DG Art Lens for Sony E is a full-frame, ultra-wide-angle prime for photographers who need Sigma’s renowned uncompromising optical performance and build quality. As the world’s fastest 14mm lens for mirrorless cameras, it combines an ultra-bright f/1.4 aperture with advanced optics and exceptional construction, which is well suited to astrophotography, landscapes, interiors, architecture and even ultra-wide environmental portraits.

Sigma’s high-end Art-series optical design includes 19 elements in 15 groups, with four aspherical, one SLD and three FLD elements that deliver sharp, consistent results across the entire frame. Sigma’s largest ever double-sided aspherical glass element has been created for this lens, which contributes to its excellent correction of sagittal coma flare and chromatic aberration, a crucial feature for rendering pin-sharp stars and fine detail in landscapes.

Handling is familiar to anyone who has used the Art series before, and the prime lens features a de-clickable aperture ring, customisable AFL button, AF/MF switch, and a lockable petal-shaped hood to reduce flare. A Manual Focus Lock switch prevents accidental focus changes during long exposures, and the rear filter holder allows small filters to be inserted securely behind the lens. There’s also a Heater retainer for shooting outdoors in cold environments, reducing the chances of condensation on the lens. The brass mount is of course weather-sealed, and a Thermally Stable Composite has been used for the outer barrel, which helps with temperature changes.

With its outstanding optical design, robust build and compressive controls, the Sigma 14mm f/1.4 DG Art Lens for Sony E is a lens that for professional and enthusiast photographers who shoot ultra wide angle subjects.

Sigma 14mm f/1.4 DG Art Lens for Sony E in More Detail

Exceptional Optical Design

The Sigma 14mm f/1.4 DG Art lens features a sophisticated optical design with 19 elements in 15 groups, including four aspherical elements, three FLD and one SLD element. This provides excellent correction of chromatic aberration and sagittal coma flare, which helps to keep stars and point light sources round and defined even when shooting wide open at the fast f/1.4 aperture.

One of these aspherical elements is the largest double-sided aspherical glass lens ever used by Sigma, which plays a role in achieving superb sharpness across the entire frame, from corner to corner.

Coatings and Image Quality

Sigma’s Super Multi-Layer and Nano Porous Coatings reduce flare and ghosting when shooting towards bright light sources. The result is high-contrast images with accurate colour and rich tones, even in challenging lighting.

Additionally, an 11-blade rounded diaphragm produces smooth, circular bokeh, while ensuring subjects appear naturally against smooth defocused backgrounds.

Refined Handling and Controls

An aperture ring on the lens barrel can be clicked or de-clicked depending on shooting preference, with a lock switch to prevent accidental changes. The Manual Focus Lock switch ensures the focus ring remains fixed once set, which is particularly useful for astrophotography or long-exposure photography.

The internal focusing system keeps the lens length constant, which opens up the opportunity to shoot video with a gimbal or tripod. A customisable AFL button and an AF/MF switch provide access to essential controls during shooting, allowing the lens to be customised according to your needs.

Rear Filter Holder and Heater Retainer

Due to a curved front element, which is common for ultra wide lenses, the unit includes a rear filter holder for gel filters. This is positioned between the camera and lens to keep them protected from dust and scratches. A cutting template is included, allowing users to make their own custom filters from gel sheets.

A built-in Lens Heater Retainer is available to secure heating bands in place in order to prevent condensation during cold-weather photography and astrophotography, ensuring consistent optical clarity regardless of conditions.

Build Quality

The outer shell is constructed from a Thermally Stable Composite material that has been matched to the aluminium inner structure. This design ensures consistent performance even during shooting  in temperature changes.

A familiar durable brass mount with rubber sealing provides dust and moisture resistance, while the included lockable petal-type hood reduces flare, protects the front element and stays in place during transport.
