Samyang AF 14-24mm f/2.8 Lens for L-Mount Summary

The Samyang AF 14-24mm F/2.8 for L-mount is a full-frame ultra-wide zoom lens jointly developed with Schneider-Kreuznach, covering a 14-24mm focal range with a constant f/2.8 aperture. It sits within Samyang’s autofocus range as a lightweight alternative to larger ultra-wide zooms, weighing 441g with a compact profile suited to travel and outdoor use. This places it among the lightest 14-24mm f/2.8 zoom lenses available for full-frame systems.

This lens suits landscape, architecture, interior and night sky photographers who require a wide field of view and consistent exposure. With a minimum focusing distance of 0.18m and up to 0.26x magnification, it supports close-range compositions using perspective exaggeration. The optical design includes 15 elements in 11 groups with aspherical, high refractive and extra-low dispersion elements to control aberrations across the frame.

Samyang AF 14-24mm f/2.8 Key Features

  • 14-24mm ultra-wide zoom covering 114.2° to 84.1° angle of view on full frame
  • Joint optical development with Schneider-Kreuznach

  • 15 elements in 11 groups with 3 ASP, 5 HR and 3 ED elements
  • Compact 441g design for portable full-frame use
  • Minimum focusing distance of 0.18m with up to 0.26x magnification
  • Linear STM autofocus motor for fast and quiet operation
  • 77mm front filter thread for standard filter compatibility

Observational Behaviour

Hands-on use of the Sony E-mount version showed a compact ultra-wide zoom that remains well balanced on camera bodies during handheld shooting. Centre sharpness is consistent across the zoom range, with best results around f/5.6 to f/8, while wider apertures show some corner softness. Autofocus operates quietly with minimal focus noise, and the short 0.18m focusing distance allows foreground elements to be positioned close to the lens while maintaining a wide field of view.

Samyang AF 14-24mm f/2.8 Lens for L-Mount In More Detail

14-24mm focal range

The 14-24mm zoom range provides an ultra-wide perspective suitable for landscapes, interiors and architectural work. At 14mm, the lens delivers a 114.2° angle of view on full frame, allowing expansive scenes to be captured within a single frame, while 24mm offers a slightly tighter composition for general wide-angle shooting.

Optical construction

This is the first lens released under the Schneider-Kreuznach and LK Samyang optical collaboration. It uses a 15-element, 11-group optical design incorporating three aspherical elements, five high refractive elements and three extra-low dispersion elements. This structure controls distortion, chromatic aberration and sagittal coma.

Constant f/2.8 aperture

A fixed f/2.8 aperture is maintained throughout the zoom range, supporting consistent exposure settings when zooming. This aperture also enables lower ISO use in reduced light and supports astrophotography, where wider apertures help maintain shorter shutter speeds.

Minimum focusing distance

The lens focuses as close as 0.18m across the entire zoom range, allowing subjects to be positioned close to the front element while retaining a wide field of view. At 24mm, magnification reaches approximately 0.26x, which supports detailed foreground compositions with strong perspective separation.

Autofocus system

A linear STM autofocus motor provides fast and quiet focusing with accurate subject tracking. This supports both stills and video workflows, particularly where minimal focus noise is required.

Compact physical design

At 441g and approximately 86.8mm in length, the lens remains compact compared to typical full-frame ultra-wide zooms. This reduces overall system weight when used with L-mount camera bodies.

Filter compatibility

A 77mm front filter thread allows the use of standard screw-in filters. This removes the need for specialised filter systems often required with ultra-wide lenses, supporting neutral density, polarising and protection filters.

Handling controls

The lens includes an AF/MF switch for direct control between autofocus and manual focus modes, along with a focus hold button for quick access to assigned camera functions during shooting.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Schneider-Kreuznach collaboration?

This lens is the first model developed through a partnership between LK Samyang and German optics manufacturer Schneider-Kreuznach, combining Samyang manufacturing with Schneider optical design input.

Is this lens compatible with all L-mount cameras?

It is compatible with L-mount cameras from Leica, Panasonic and Sigma that support autofocus lenses.

Can you use standard filters with this lens?

Yes, it includes a 77mm front filter thread, which allows standard screw-in filters without requiring a specialist holder system.

What makes this different from other ultra-wide zooms?

It combines a 14-24mm f/2.8 range with a compact 441g design and front filter compatibility, which are not typically found together in this lens category.

Is sharpness consistent across the frame?

Centre sharpness is strong throughout the zoom range, with best results when stopped down, while corner performance improves at mid apertures.

Is this lens smaller than other 14-24mm f/2.8 zooms?

Yes, it is significantly smaller and lighter than typical ultra-wide f/2.8 zoom lenses while maintaining a full-frame optical design.

Is autofocus suitable for video?

The linear STM motor provides quiet operation, which supports video recording where focus noise needs to be minimised.

Does this lens rely on digital corrections?

Some distortion and vignetting are corrected through in-camera profiles, which is common for compact ultra-wide zoom designs.

Is this lens suitable for astrophotography?

Yes, the constant f/2.8 aperture and ultra-wide focal range support night sky photography, while optical elements help control aberrations such as coma.
