Panasonic Lumix S5 II X Black with S 100-500mm f/5-7.1 Lens Kit Summary

The Panasonic Lumix S5 II X Black with S 100–500mm f/5–7.1 Lens Kit combines Panasonic’s video-focused S5 II X body with a long-range L-Mount telephoto zoom for distant and fast-moving subjects. The S5 II X extends on the S5 II by retaining phase hybrid autofocus with 779 phase-detection points, while adding expanded video codecs, external recording options and enhanced connectivity.

The camera captures 24.2 megapixel stills and supports continuous shooting at up to 9 frames per second with full autofocus tracking, which is especially relevant for wildlife and action photography, which are suited to the lens in this Panasonic kit. The included 100–500mm zoom provides super-telephoto reach, while optical stabilisation works with the camera’s 5-axis in-body stabilisation to control handheld shake at longer focal lengths.

This kit suits photographers and hybrid creators who shoot both stills and video, particularly those working outdoors with unpredictable or fast moving subjects and requiring advanced video recording formats alongside long telephoto capability.

Panasonic Lumix S5 II X Black Camera Key Features

  • 24.2 megapixel full-frame sensor for stills and video capture
  • Phase hybrid autofocus with 779 phase-detection points
  • Continuous shooting up to 9 frames per second with subject tracking
  • 5-axis in-body stabilisation rated up to 6.5 stops
  • Internal ProRes recording and external SSD support
  • Real-time subject recognition for people, animals and vehicles
  • Dual SD card slots compatible with UHS-II media

During continuous shooting, the electronic viewfinder maintains a near-continuous live view, allowing subjects to remain visible while tracking movement. Autofocus remains active throughout bursts, with subject recognition updating in real time.

Panasonic Lumix S 100–500mm f/5–7.1 OIS Lens Key Features

  • Telephoto zoom covering 100–500mm for distant subjects
  • Optical image stabilisation rated up to 6 stops of correction
  • Dual I.S. support when paired with the S5 II X
  • Internal focus system avoids extension during focusing
  • Weather-resistant construction for outdoor use

Mounted on the S5 II X, the lens is well balanced for a super-telephoto. Zoom and focus operation do not extend the lens, which helps maintain consistent handling when tracking subjects, working on rigs or adjusting framing during recording.

Panasonic Lumix S5 II X Black with S 100-500mm f/5-7.1 Lens Kit in More Detail

Image quality and stabilisation

The S5 II X uses the same 24.2 megapixel full-frame sensor as the S5 II, delivering consistent detail with controlled noise at higher ISO settings. This is useful for early morning or low-light outdoor shooting, where shutter speed needs to remain high at long focal lengths.

Stabilisation plays a central role when using the 100–500mm lens. The camera’s 5-axis in-body stabilisation offers up to 6.5 stops of correction, while the lens contributes up to 6 stops through optical stabilisation. When combined using Dual I.S., the system reduces the impact of angular movement and small hand shake, improving stability at the long end of the zoom and increasing the number of usable handheld frames.

Autofocus performance

Phase hybrid autofocus provides wide phase-detection coverage across most of the frame, improving subject tracking consistency compared to earlier Lumix S models. Subject recognition continuously identifies animals and maintains focus as subjects move across the frame or toward the camera.

With continuous shooting up to 9 frames per second and autofocus active throughout, the camera supports action sequences without dropping focus between frames. Viewfinder behaviour avoids full blackout, showing brief refresh interruptions that help maintain subject awareness when tracking erratic movement.

Video features and recording formats

The S5 II X expands video capability beyond the standard S5 II. It supports internal ProRes recording and direct recording to external SSDs via USB, reducing reliance on memory cards for longer or higher-bitrate shoots. Advanced codecs allow footage to integrate more easily into professional editing workflows.

Autofocus tracking remains active during recording, reducing focus pulsing that can occur with contrast-only systems. Stabilisation assists handheld video work, particularly at shorter focal lengths within the zoom range, while remaining effective for controlled telephoto shots.

Handling and real-world use

The S5 II X shares the same body layout and grip as the S5 II, providing a secure hold and well spaced controls. This is important when supporting a long telephoto lens for extended periods, whether shooting stills or video.

At 1,285g, the 100–500mm lens remains manageable for field use. Balance stays consistent during zoom and focus changes, and weather sealing across both camera and lens supports continued shooting in damp, dusty or changeable outdoor conditions.
