Panasonic Lumix S 85mm f/1.8 Lens Summary
With an advanced optical design the Panasonic Lumix S 85mm f/1.8 lens delivers sharp images and videos when mounted on Lumix S series cameras. Forming the first of four planned f/1.8 full frame L mount lenses, this S 85mm f/1.8 prime delivers excellent results across all fronts. With 9 elements arranged in 8 groups and the use of 2 Extra-low Dispersion (ED) lenses, both axial chromatic aberration and chromatic aberrations are well controlled and there is minimal distortion displayed. This prime focal width is aimed at portrait photographers as well as photographers who capture any medium telephoto subjects such as fashion, weddings or close detail images.
The bright aperture combines with a 9-blade circular diaphragm rendering sharp subjects with beautifully soft, round out of focus bokeh areas, without vignetting. The S 85mm f/1.8 also excels when recording videos through the use of a mechanism which suppresses focus breathing. This capitalises on the latest L mount cameras in the S range including the Lumix S5. Completing a number of desirable features are the inclusion of a dust and splash resistant design with rugged together with durable build quality. Despite these traits the lens weighs only 355g. making it ideal for longer shooting sessions and for any travel requirements.

Our Verdict
Panasonic is fully committed to the full frame L mount alliance, which is further demonstrated by the introduction of the Lumix S 85mm f/1.8 lens. This is the first of four new fast f/1.8 lenses which will be released with similar dimensions, weight and common filter threads, to allow for a streamlined workflow. This first model is sure to satisfy the most demanding professionals and enthusiast users alike and will instil yet more confidence in Panasonic’s optical capabilities. Many Lumix users are hybrid shooters and the design has been optimised to provide excellent results whether capturing still images or videos.
The 85mm width is suitable for a number of subjects which require sharp subjects and smooth defocus areas. Naturally this includes portraits and weddings, however many photographers are finding new innovative uses for this medium telephoto reach. These night include landscape photography, nature and of course detail shots where a prime really excels. The lightweight structure combined with a weather sealed exterior is sure to appeal to many photographers who are drawn to this focal length and work outdoors. We are excited to see new models from this group as they appear including the next planned 70-300mm telephoto zoom lens which is currently under development.

Condition guide
Our used products are subject to wear and tear in comparison to brand new products. This also applies to accessories that are supplied with the camera including batteries which may have a lower optimum performance level/life expectancy.
- Like New – The equipment is in a condition as if you have just bought it from the manufacturer. The item is still considered to be ‘Like New’ even without the original packaging and accessories. The product has been fully tested and is in perfect working order. Lenses are optically clear. There may be light dust present that will not effect the imagery.
- Excellent – The equipment should be close to being ‘Like New’ but there may be some small cosmetic blemishes that lower its grade. The product has been fully tested and is in perfect excellent order.
- Cameras – Should have no marks on the LCD screen
- Lenses – Should have no marks on the elements and optically clear. There may be light dust present that will not effect the imagery.
- Very Good – The equipment may have some slight cosmetic wear to the paintwork and cosmetic blemishes with only light signs of use and the product has been fully tested and is in great working order.
- Cameras – The LCD screen may have small signs of wear that does not affect its display
- Lenses – The mount of the lens will start to show signs of wear
- Good – The equipment is showing more obvious signs of cosmetic wear and blemishes, but the product has been fully tested and is in great working order.
- Cameras – LCD screen may have scratches or wear that is starting to affect the display.
- Lenses – May have slight dust inside that does not affect images. The mount shows signs of use.
- Well Used – The equipment will show significant signs of wear. The paintwork will be coming away in large areas exposing the metal work, but the product has been fully tested and is in great working order.
- Cameras – LCD screen is heavily worn either by de-lamination or has scratches to it. Rubber grips are starting to come away from the body.
- Lenses – The lens has dust inside that may affect images. The rubber zoom/focus ring is coming away from the barrel of the lens.
