Nikon Z DX 35mm f/1.7 Lens Summary

The Nikon Z DX 35mm f/1.7 Lens is a lightweight standard prime that offers crop format mirrorless Z camera users a compact and accessible way to explore creative shallow depth-of-field, macro-style close-ups as well as everyday photography. It features a fast f/1.7 aperture and a relatively wide 35mm focal length, which is roughly 52mm equivalent in full-frame terms. This is a highly popular focal length and a versatile option for general use, capturing anything from portraits and lifestyle photos to product shots and handheld video.

Despite its small size, this lens delivers an impressive 0.67x reproduction ratio, which is equivalent to life-size magnification when viewed on full-frame format. With a close focus distance of just 16cm, it’s ideal for detailed compositions such as flowers, insects, food, or still life, where you can fill the frame fine details. The f/1.7 aperture allows you to work in low light and experiment with soft background blur, even in low light situations.

This is the first DX-format macro lens in the Z mount system, giving Nikon APS-C mirrorless users a great option for close-up photography without the need for cropping or using any adapters. It weighs a mere 220g and is just 72mm long, which is extremely portable for handheld stills and video recording.

Nikon Z DX 35mm f/1.7 Lens in More Detail

Standard View with Shallow Depth of Field

The 35mm focal length gives a natural field of view for DX-format cameras, and is similar to what the human eye sees. This makes the lens a great walkaround option that feels familiar when composing shots. The fast f/1.7 aperture creates good separation between subject and background, with soft transitions between in out-of-focus areas.

Close-Up Capability

One of the most notable features of this prime is the 0.67x reproduction ratio, as well as the 16cm minimum focusing distance, which lets users get extremely close to their subjects. This isn’t a full 1:1 macro lens, but the results offer excellent magnification which are detail-rich. It’s especially effective for product photography, nature, or b-roll footage where close focus adds visual interest.

Lightweight and Handholdable

At just 220g, the Z DX 35mm f/1.7 is easy to carry every day and doesn’t add much size and weight to smaller Z cameras like the Z30, Z50 or Z fc. Despite its compact size, the lens uses an optical formula of 8 elements in 7 groups, including one aspherical ED element, to reduce aberrations and maintain clarity throughout the frame. The 52mm filter thread also makes it easy to add ND or polarising filters when needed.

Ready for Video

With smooth, quiet autofocus and a fast aperture, this lens suits video shooting as well as stills. Focus breathing is minimal, and the small size makes it well-suited to handheld or gimbal-mounted recording. Whether you’re filming short form content, vlogs or B-roll, the 35mm focal length works across a wide variety of scenes.
