Nikon Z 24-105mm f/4-7.1 Lens Summary
The Nikon Z 24-105mm f/4-7.1 is a full-frame standard zoom lens for the Nikon Z mount, which covers a broad focal range that suits everyday photography and general video content. This lens sits below Nikon’s premium S-Line lenses, and is a lightweight, cost-conscious option for photographers who want shooting versatility without the size or price of professional-grade zooms.
What sets this lens apart is its combination of range, close-focusing capability, and compact design. With a minimum focus distance as short as 0.2 m at the wide end and a 0.5x maximum reproduction ratio at longer focal lengths, it supports creative detail shots and close-ups that go beyond typical kit zooms. The internal focusing design and quiet autofocus system also make it suitable for casual video recording.
This lens is aimed primarily at beginners and intermediate users who want their first full-frame Z zoom lens, or creators who are looking for a single lens to cover diverse subjects like landscapes, portraits, travel, and everyday shooting with minimal weight or unnecessary complexity.
Nikon Z 24-105mm f/4-7.1 Lens in More Detail
Image quality
The optical design has 12 elements in 10 groups, including one ED glass element and two aspherical elements to manage chromatic aberration and distortion across the zoom range. This is intended to deliver consistent sharpness for full-frame Nikon Z sensors while still keeping the lens compact.
The zoom range covers commonly used focal lengths for landscapes, environmental portraits, and general photography, allowing photographers to shoot without frequent lens changes. The 7-blade rounded diaphragm supports smooth background rendering when shooting at longer focal lengths or close distances, which is particularly useful for portraits and subject-conscious shots.
Autofocus performance
An internal focusing system keeps the lens length constant during focusing. This helps maintain balance on smaller Z-series camera bodies and contributes to easier handling. Autofocus is fast and quiet, which is beneficial for both photography and video, especially when recording in quiet environments. The close-focusing capability at both ends of the zoom range allows the lens to transition easily from wide contextual shots to close framing without needing to step back and zoom with your feet.
Video features
For video the lens supports high-resolution zoom on compatible Nikon Z cameras, extending its usable range without a physical zoom change. The quiet autofocus also reduces the risk of focus noise being picked up by on-camera microphones.
Consistent handling and internal focus also help to maintain framing and balance when mounted on gimbals or compact video rigs, making it a great option for casual video and hybrid shooters.
Handling, control and stabilisation
Weighing approximately 350 g and measuring just 106.5 mm long, the lens pairs comfortably with smaller full-frame Z bodies. The control ring can be assigned functions such as aperture control, ISO adjustment, or exposure compensation, allowing the user to adjust settings without moving away from the shooting position.
With a 67 mm filter thread, it is compatible with widely available filters, which is especially useful for landscape and video.
