Product Overview
This video head replaces the previous 502’s fixed counterbalance and 10kg payload with a switchable counterbalance and XCHANGE-compatible base. It trades some maximum payload for finer control and faster changes between supports.
If you regularly switch between setups or shoot with a lighter mirrorless or compact movie rigs, this is where the design provides the greatest benefit.
Counterbalance you can switch off
The 4.4kg counterbalance at 55mm C.O.G. can be disengaged entirely. On the previous 502’s fixed 4kg system, lighter mirrorless bodies could get pushed back during tilt because the counterbalance was always active. Switching it off removes that spring-back, so it suits a wider range of camera weights.
Drag that isn’t preset
Pan and tilt drag adjust independently and continuously, rather than in fixed steps. This lets you tune the resistance for different camera movements, from slow interview reframing to tracking a moving subject. Independent pan and tilt locks hold position once you’re set.
Built for changing rigs mid-shoot
XCHANGE compatibility on the flat base lets you move between compatible tripods, sliders and other supports quickly. That is useful when a production requires different support systems. The top-loading 504PLONG-type plate provides fore/aft adjustment for balancing the camera, while the 3/8-inch Easy Link with ARRI locating pin provides a secure connection for monitors, arms and other accessories.
Frequently asked questions
Does it come with a tripod?
No, it is sold as a head only. You’ll need a compatible tripod or other support with a 3/8-inch or XCHANGE connection.
Do I need an extra adapter to use XCHANGE?
It is ready as standard. To use the quick-release function, you’ll need a support with a compatible connection or a suitable adapter if your existing support doesn’t have one.
Can I use the 502X with a 75mm bowl tripod?
Yes, but the head has a flat base rather than a half ball. The optional 520BALLSHX Half Ball Adapter allows compatible flat-base Manfrotto heads, including the 502X, to be mounted on a tripod with a 75mm bowl.
