Leica Monovid 8x25 Black Monocular Summary

The Leica Monovid 8x25 Black Monocular is a premium single-eye optical device offering compact viewing with added close-focus capability. It sits alongside the Noctivid Compact range, combining high transmission optics with precise mechanical control in a smaller, lightweight form.

This model suits travel, urban observation and detailed close-range viewing where a binocular is not required. The 8x magnification provides stable handheld use, supported by a 120m field of view at 1,000m for general observation. With 90% light transmission and a 3.1mm exit pupil, it maintains a bright and clear image in daylight and mixed lighting conditions.

An integrated close-up lens extends its use to short distances, supporting detailed viewing of objects between approximately 25 and 30cm.

Leica Monovid 8x25 Black Monocular In More Detail

Optical system

The monocular uses a roof prism design with phase-correction coating (P40) and Leica’s HighLux-System (HLS), maintaining contrast and clarity across the image. HDC multilayer coatings are applied to the outer lens surfaces, supporting light transmission of approximately 90 percent.

With an 8x magnification and 25mm objective lens, the optical system provides a 3.1mm exit pupil. This supports clear viewing in daylight and mixed lighting conditions.

Field of view

A field of view of 120 metres at 1,000 metres supports general observation across landscapes, architecture and events. The 6.9 degree angle of view allows for easier subject acquisition when scanning.

The standard close focus distance is approximately 2 metres. When using the supplied close-up lens, the viewing distance extends to approximately 25 to 30cm for detailed inspection of nearby subjects.

Focusing system

Internal focusing is controlled through a central focus ring, maintaining smooth adjustment across the focusing range. Diopter compensation of ±4 dpt is integrated into the eyepiece.

The sealed internal system maintains performance in changing environments and prevents dust or moisture from entering during use.

Eyepiece design

The eyepiece supports use with or without glasses, with 15mm eye relief providing a comfortable viewing position. The rotary eyecup uses a sliding mechanism with two click stops for adjustment.

Housing

The monocular uses an aluminium housing with nitrogen filling to prevent internal fogging. The leather finish provides a refined exterior while maintaining durability.

The body remains watertight to a depth of 5 metres. At approximately 152g, it is significantly lighter than compact binoculars and easier to carry in a pocket or bag.
