Laowa 90mm f/2.8 2x Ultra Macro APO Lens for Sony E Summary

The Laowa 90mm f/2.8 2x Ultra Macro APO Lens for full-frame Sony cameras (FE) is capable of excellent image quality and benefits from a compact and lightweight 619g design. An apochromatic optical design (APO) renders well controlled images showing minimal chromatic aberration, purple fringing or ghosting, for less editing requirements.

The 2:1 magnification enables you to capture beautiful close-ups of insects, flowers or any other subjects in immense detail, and the 90mm f/2.8 2x Ultra Macro offers excellent low light performance from the f/2.8 wide maximum aperture. Sharpness is strong even when shooting wide open through to f/8 and f/11, which is ideal for macro work. Laowa designed the aperture with 13 blades, which renders silky smooth out of focus areas and rounded bokeh. At 90mm this f/2.8 2x Ultra Macro APO Lens is also ideal for portraits and similar short telephoto subjects where sharpness and control over depth of field are desirable.

Laowa 90mm f/2.8 2x Ultra Macro APO Lens for Sony E in More Detail

2:1 Magnification

With 2x magnification at infinity more details of your subject are shown, perfect for capturing tiny insects, flowers and super close-up shots of all kinds. Lens magnification ranges from 0.1x to 2x while focusing as close as 20.5cm to infinity, with a maximum 2:1 ratio. This allows you to capture astonishing images and objects of different sizes more easily.

Apochromatic APO Design

The apochromatic APO optical design ensures superb results from near to far, as well as throughout the aperture range and across all magnifications. This APO lens delivers:

  • Chromatic Aberration (CA) at both in-focus and out-of-focus areas
  • Purple fringing and ghosting are controlled to minimum
  • Achieve high image quality
  • Reduce post-editing time

Designed for mirrorless cameras

Laowa created the 90mm f/2.8 2x Ultra Macro APO Lens exclusively for mirrorless systems with a shorter flange distance, including this version for full-frame Sony mirrorless cameras. The 2x Ultra Macro APO weighs around 619g and measures approximately 120mm long, making it one of the most compact macros at this short telephoto focal width amongst all Sony lenses.

Outstanding sharpness

A 13 element design includes three extra-low dispersion elements, providing high optical quality with outstanding results from corner to corner of the image. Sharpness is perceptible even when wide open, right through to f/8 and even f/11 and the lens demonstrates great contrast and resolution.

Beautiful bokeh rendition

The 13 bladed aperture design in the Laowa 90mm f/2.8 2x Ultra Macro APO Lens for Sony renders pleasing rounded bokeh balls and smooth out of focus areas when desirable. This is ideal for capturing close-ups as well as portraits, when being used as a short telephoto prime. Internal focusing also helps to maintain lens length and balance, whilst reducing the chances of accidentally knocking into your subject. This also contributes to keeping dust out of the lens.

Looking to sell your Laowa 90mm f/2.8 2x Ultra Macro APO Lens for Sony E?

Our Verdict

Laowa has a strong track record in creating unique and compelling macro lenses, with this 90mm f/2.8 2x Ultra Macro APO Lens for Sony continuing the trend. It has been designed exclusively for mirrorless cameras, which has resulted in a compact and lightweight prime of a high calibre. With double the magnification ratio you can create enticing close-up images of the world around, showing high levels of detail, which is not possible at lower magnifications.

To complement this level of detail the optics features special extra-low dispersion elements as well as an APO (apochromatic) design. These do a great job in controlling artefacts and help to reduce editing time removing ghosting, flare and aberrations. Results are extremely sharp across the frame, with high contrast and superb levels of detail all possible with manual focusing lenses.

A wide f/2.8 aperture gathers plenty of light, whilst the 13-bladed design renders extremely smooth out of focus areas, combining features which are desirable in a short telephoto lens.
