Our Verdict
This burly wide to standard zoom lens from Canon boasts a brighter aperture than the comparable RF 24-70mm F/2.8L lens, albeit with 4mm less focal width at the wide end. For users who are happy to forgo the extra width, the RF 28-70mm F/2 L USM is a joy to use, providing exceptional image quality throughout the aperture range and across the entire zoom. It’;s easy to work with thanks to customisable lens barrel control, weather sealing and a close 0.39m focus distance.
The 9-bladed wide aperture renders smooth defocus areas and pleasing bokeh, providing plenty of creative opportunities to experiment with a shallow depth of field, especially when shooting portraits.
These advanced capabilities ensure the 28-70mm is ideal in any number of situations, for both professional and enthusiasts-level content creation. Whether you primarily shoot photos or videos, near silent and accurate AF helps capture pin sharp details, especially when paired with Canon’s cutting-edge Dual Pixel AF technology, found in many recently released mirrorless cameras.
