Atomos Ninja RAW Monitor-Recorder In More Detail
Recording architecture and codec support
Ninja RAW records over HDMI directly from a compatible camera’s output, capturing Apple ProRes or ProRes RAW to CFexpress Type B media or approved USB-C storage. HDMI input supports up to 6K at 30p, 4K at 60p and Full HD at 120p. Recording externally allows bypass of certain in-camera compression and bit-depth limitations, depending on camera capability.
Supported codecs include ProRes RAW, ProRes RAW HQ, ProRes LT, ProRes 422 and ProRes 422 HQ. Files integrate directly into major editing platforms including DaVinci Resolve, Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro and Avid Media Composer.
Monitoring and exposure tools
The 1500nit HDR touchscreen provides sufficient brightness for outdoor use and supports HDR, HLG and PQ workflows. Monitoring tools include EL Zone false colour, waveform, vectorscope, zebras and focus peaking. Frame guides, grid markers, anamorphic desqueeze and display flip options assist composition and framing.
Onion Skin overlay enables frame comparison for alignment in VFX, animation or continuity-sensitive productions.
Connectivity and media workflow
Ninja RAW introduces CFexpress Type B support within the Ninja line, providing higher sustained write speeds suitable for 6K ProRes RAW capture. Two USB-C ports allow direct connection of external drives, a USB-C network adaptor for cloud and streaming workflows, or a calibration probe. Firmware updates can be installed via USB-C network adaptor or by copying files to compatible media.
HDMI loop-through passes the incoming signal to additional devices such as wireless transmitters or secondary monitors without interrupting recording.
Camera control and streaming
USB-C camera control enables start and stop recording as well as adjustment of ISO, shutter speed, aperture and white balance on supported cameras. NDI 6 and HX3 TX and RX are supported via USB-C network adaptor. Ninja RAW does not include integrated Wi-Fi, so network functionality requires a compatible adaptor.
Expanding the Ninja range
Within the current line-up, Ninja RAW focuses on HDMI capture with CFexpress Type B support and ProRes RAW recording up to 6K30p. Ninja TX GO and Ninja TX extend functionality with integrated wireless features and, in the case of Ninja TX, higher maximum ProRes RAW frame rates up to 6K60p and 8K30p. Ninja RAW does not include integrated Wi-Fi or SDI connectivity, concentrating instead on HDMI-based workflows with external network expansion via USB-C.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I stream from Ninja RAW?
Yes. NDI 6 and HX3 TX and RX are included as standard. Ninja RAW does not have integrated Wi-Fi, so streaming requires a compatible USB-C network adaptor, sold separately. It can connect directly to Mavis Cloud Hub for live streaming to platforms such as YouTube, Facebook Live, RTMP and SRT services.
Does Ninja RAW require any activations?
No. All supported codecs are pre-installed and ready to record. Firmware updates require a USB-C network adaptor for internet installation, or can be installed by copying update files to a CFexpress Type B card or approved USB-C storage device.
What can I connect via USB-C?
The USB-C ports support external USB-C storage devices, a USB-C network adaptor for streaming and cloud workflows, and compatible monitor calibration probes such as Calibrite. Supported devices should follow Atomos qualification guidance.
Is there an AtomX slot for future expansion?
No. Ninja RAW does not include an AtomX expansion slot. Expansion and accessory connectivity are handled through the onboard USB-C ports.
What media does Ninja RAW record to?
It records to CFexpress Type B cards and approved USB-C storage devices. Media selection should follow Atomos compatibility recommendations for sustained write performance.
Does Ninja RAW support ProRes RAW?
Yes. It supports ProRes RAW and ProRes RAW HQ over HDMI from compatible cameras, up to 6K30p depending on the camera’s output capability.
How does Ninja RAW differ from Ninja TX GO and Ninja TX?
Ninja RAW focuses on HDMI recording with CFexpress Type B support and external USB-C network expansion. Ninja TX GO and Ninja TX integrate wireless functionality, and Ninja TX supports higher ProRes RAW frame rates and additional connectivity including SDI.
Is Ninja RAW suitable for mirrorless cameras?
Yes. It is intended for HDMI-equipped DSLR and mirrorless cameras where users want external ProRes or ProRes RAW recording, advanced monitoring tools and camera control.
