Nikon to Acquire RED Cinema Camera Maker

NEWS: On 7th March 2024 Nikon announced its intention to acquire 100% of US Cinema Camera Manufacturer RED.com, LLC. Nikon's acquisition of RED will lead to RED becoming a wholly-owned subsidiary, signalling exciting developments for the future of cinema-ready cameras.

As Nikon know’s all too well, RED owns an exclusive proprietary RAW compression technology, allowing for extensive compression without image degradation, which is essential when dealing with large file sizes.

Who is RED cinema cameras?

RED has been at the forefront of professional cinema cameras since 2005 and having garnered an Academy Award and becoming the preferred camera for many Hollywood productions, their impact on the film industry is undeniable.

Directors and cinematographers praise RED for its unwavering dedication to innovation and an ability to deliver unparalleled image quality tailored for top-tier filmmaking and video production.

How does this impact Nikon cameras?

With Nikon mirrorless cameras such as the Z9 and Z8 being praised for offering some of the best video performance amongst prosumer level mirrorless cameras, how does this affect the lineup? This is currently uncertain, however Nikon stated that this is ‘a result of the mutual desires of Nikon and RED to meet the customers’ needs and offer exceptional user experiences that exceed expectations, merging the strengths of both companies’.

With this partnership, Nikon is poised to integrate essential RED cinema technology into its mirrorless cameras, and in all likelihood ultimately brand RED cinema cameras as Nikon-owned.

What does the future hold?

In the press release Nikon clearly outlined how RED’s knowledge in cinema cameras, which includes unique image compression technology and colour science, will enable the development of distinctive products in the professional cinema camera market.

This promises an exciting future of product development that pushes the boundaries of what is possible in the rapidly growing film and video production space.
