Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Lens Summary
The Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD lens for Sony E-mount is the first zoom lens for APS-C format cameras from Tamron. With a constant, fast aperture throughout the zoom range and Vibration Compensation, the lens performs well in low lighting conditions, allowing users to hand hold whatever subject they are capturing. An equivalent focal width of 25.5-105mm provides versatile shooting across multiple subjects from landscapes to portraits and everything in between.
The lens features a moisture resistant construction, Fluorine Coating and a common 67mm filter thread, the same as the Tamron series of lenses for full-frame Sony mirrorless cameras. The 17-70mm is fully compatible with advanced Sony AF functionality, including Fast Hybrid AF and Eye AF.

Lens sharpness is impressive thanks to 16 elements arranged in 12 groups. Special optics include two GM (Glass Moulded Aspherical) lens elements and one hybrid aspherical lens element. Tamron has arranged these to maintain high-resolution performance from edge to edge as required by Sony sensors.
Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Lens In More Detail
This Model B070 is the first f/2.8 fast zoom lens in the world for APS-C mirrorless cameras to achieve a 4.1x zoom ratio.
The design delivers excellent resolution from edge-to-edge at 70mm which is a commonly used telephoto zoom focal length.
Additional sophisticated algorithms have been optimised for this model and with the dedicated, independently operating MPU features combine to compensate for vibration most admirably. VC works whether the lens is used with cameras with or without in-body image stabilisation.
When used with Sony's APS-C mirrorless cameras the zoom lens is nicely balanced and provides a comfortable user experience suited to extended shooting periods.
Lens mount seals and around other critical locations deter moisture and raindrops for a moisture-resistant construction.
The AF drive incorporates a sensor that accurately detects the position of the lens while the RXD motor unit delivers optimised AF control. This achieves fast and accurate AF operation and allows users to maintain tack sharp focus on continuously moving subjects Thanks to the exceedingly quiet AF the lens can be used discreetly in situations which require low noise levels, and for video recording.

Our Verdict
Tamron continually impresses with high quality lenses for Sony at an affordable price point and the 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD continues in this vein. This is the first standard zoom lens Tamron has designed for APS-C sized Sony cameras and it is packed with features for serious enthusiast photographers and video makers. A ‘world first’ constant aperture is also impressive, particularly when coupled with full integration for Sony Eye and Face phase detect focus systems. This enables users to gain focus whilst hand-holding even as light levels fade, particularly as the new artificial intelligence vibration control provides effective anti-shake compensation.
The 17-70mm Di III-A VC RXD lens is also extremely compact and lightweight, perfectly suited to smaller mirrorless cameras. Anyone lucky enough to travel in the near future will certainly want to consider this lens as a versatile all-in-one high performance option. Our used products are subject to wear and tear in comparison to brand new products. This also applies to accessories that are supplied with the camera including batteries which may have a lower optimum performance level/life expectancy.
- Like New – The equipment is in a condition as if you have just bought it from the manufacturer. The item is still considered to be ‘Like New’ even without the original packaging and accessories. The product has been fully tested and is in perfect working order. Lenses are optically clear. There may be light dust present that will not effect the imagery.
- Excellent – The equipment should be close to being ‘Like New’ but there may be some small cosmetic blemishes that lower its grade. The product has been fully tested and is in perfect excellent order.
- Cameras – Should have no marks on the LCD screen
- Lenses – Should have no marks on the elements and optically clear. There may be light dust present that will not effect the imagery.
- Very Good – The equipment may have some slight cosmetic wear to the paintwork and cosmetic blemishes with only light signs of use and the product has been fully tested and is in great working order.
- Cameras – The LCD screen may have small signs of wear that does not affect its display
- Lenses – The mount of the lens will start to show signs of wear
- Good – The equipment is showing more obvious signs of cosmetic wear and blemishes, but the product has been fully tested and is in great working order.
- Cameras – LCD screen may have scratches or wear that is starting to affect the display.
- Lenses – May have slight dust inside that does not affect images. The mount shows signs of use.
- Well Used – The equipment will show significant signs of wear. The paintwork will be coming away in large areas exposing the metal work, but the product has been fully tested and is in great working order.
- Cameras – LCD screen is heavily worn either by de-lamination or has scratches to it. Rubber grips are starting to come away from the body.
- Lenses – The lens has dust inside that may affect images. The rubber zoom/focus ring is coming away from the barrel of the lens.
