Sony A6700 Mirrorless Camera Body (ILCE-6700) Summary
The Sony A6700 is the flagship APS-C mirrorless camera at the top of Sony’s A6000-series. It combines a 26 megapixel backside illuminated sensor with the BIONZ XR processor and a dedicated AI autofocus processor. This brings capabilities previously seen in higher-end full-frame models into a compact crop-sensor body, which benefits size, weight and effective reach.
The camera records detailed stills with good dynamic range and provides fast readout during both mechanical and electronic shutter shooting. Subject recognition autofocus tracks people, animals, birds and vehicles with improved consistency, and includes pose estimation for human subjects. Video recording features oversampled 4K from 6K readout, internal 10-bit recording and a wide choice of professional formats for content creation at all levels.
The A6700 suits photographers and video creators who want advanced autofocus, good video capabilities and improved handling from a smaller system. Wildlife, travel and hybrid shooters benefit from the APS-C crop factor, updated controls and stabilisation without investing in a larger full-frame body.
Sony A6700 Vs A6600 Key improvements
Compared with the A6600, the A6700 features a new sensor, faster processing and a separate AI processor dedicated to autofocus and auto white balance. Subject detection has been expanded with people and animals, birds, insects and select vehicles, with pose estimation improving tracking when subjects turn away or partially leave the frame.
Handling has also been refined. A grip is deeper and feels more like full-frame Alpha bodies, which makes the camera comfortable to carry with longer lenses for extended periods. A new front control dial brings the total to three, and the addition of a dedicated AF-ON button supports back-button focus. A physical stills, movie and S&Q selector allows quick switching between shooting modes without menu diving, which is particularly useful for hybrid users.
Sony A6700 Mirrorless Camera in More Detail
Image quality
The 26 megapixel sensor provides a useful increase in resolution over previous A6000-series models, allowing more flexibility for cropping and printing larger images. Files show good noise control at lower sensitivities, with very clean results up to ISO 1600. Noise increases gradually and can be managed effectively in post-processing when required. Colour reproduction is consistent across lighting conditions, with skin tones appearing neutral and repeatable under mixed light thanks to the AI-driven processor which can handle auto white balance more effectively.
Autofocus performance
Autofocus is supported by a dedicated AI processor, which handles subject recognition independently of general image processing. This results in more reliable tracking when subjects change direction or momentarily turn away from the camera. Pose estimation maintains focus on human subjects even when faces are not fully visible. For wildlife and action, the fast sensor readout supports electronic shutter shooting with reduced rolling shutter effects, making it easier to capture fast movement during bursts.
Video features and formats
Video recording uses full pixel readout to generate oversampled 4K footage from 6K data, producing detailed results without pixel binning. Internal 10-bit recording caters to colour-critical workflows, while formats such as XAVC S-I and XAVC HS provide flexibility between quality and file size. S-Log3, S-Cinetone and user LUT support place the A6700 alongside Sony’s cinema-focused models for grading-friendly footage. Features such as focus breathing compensation and auto-framing assist solo shooters and small crews to achieve professional looking results for content.
Handling and controls
The revised body design improves balance with larger lenses yet remains compact enough for travel and handheld work. A vari-angle touchscreen enables touch focus, menu navigation and playback, while the electronic viewfinder offers a clear view for outdoor shooting.
The physical stills, movie and S&Q switch allows rapid transitions between capture modes, reducing setup time when conditions change. Battery life remains strong thanks to the NP-FZ100 battery, supporting longer sessions without frequent changes.
