Leica camera releases often involve a collaboration with a global brand, or a colour variant that draws from Leica's extensive history of film cameras. An announcement on 28th May 2026 bucks that trend with a new Metal Grey paint finish that spans the entire lineup of compact cameras, M lenses and rangefinders.
Join us for this brief news story as we explore Leica’s new Metal Grey colour range, including Q3, M11-P and D-Lux 8 variants alongside matching accessories and a limited-edition APO Summicron lens.

Leica has always used colour finishes to express something about their cameras. For example, black paint develops brass wear over time and becomes a personalised document of the photographer's journey. Safari olive green, which dates way back to the 1960s, carried a functional seriousness that collectors have pursued ever since.
Titanium finishes, Ghost editions, Reporter cameras and many more. Each said something specific about who the camera was for and what it represented.
All of those releases are selective, as are special edition cameras like the Hodinkee Ghost collaboration, 007 and more. Every significant Leica colour release in recent memory was either limited, isolated, or both.
The new Metal Grey is neither, which is the key difference with this finish, and seems to signify a whole new approach to colour options for Leica.

This is the first time Leica has launched a new finish across multiple product families simultaneously as a standard colour option. This isn’t a special edition, a limited run, and neither is it a collaboration that will sell out pronto.
The launch spans the M11-P, Q3 and D-Lux 8 bodies, as well as the popular APO Summicron-M 50mm f/2 ASPH lens, which is a limited run of 1000. Additionally, there are compact camera cases, straps, and even a colour-matched battery, which we've seen previously in other variants.
This is a considered colour release, dressed rather than accessorised, which will provide broad appeal to photographers and hybrid creators who like to personalise, accessorise and wear their Leica camera collection with pride.

The Metal Grey finish is cool, industrial and understated, which is not uncommon for Leica cameras, with relatively frequent releases that even go so far as to delete the iconic red dot logo. Recent examples include the Q3 Monochrom, M11-D Black Paint Finish and others.
However, the accessories accompanying this new Leica grey are also perfectly matched. The leather case for the D-Lux 8 comes in a warm contrasting cognac brown. Protectors for the Q3 and M11 are dark brown leather, while the new straps are braided black, complementing earlier flat straps touting the same braided finish.
The combination of grey, cognac and black reflects the way Leica photographers may think about carrying their equipment, which is to say as a unified colour palette, where accessories complement the camera.

Interestingly, the APO Summicron-M 50mm f/2 ASPH in Metal Grey is a limited release, with only 1,000 units planned worldwide. The camera colours are a permanent addition, while the lens is a limited release.
If you want a coherent M11-P camera system with a matching grey lens, we would recommend snapping one up before they're gone.

Leica Q3 Metal Grey
The Leica Q3 Metal Grey is likely to be a very popular compact camera that keen photographers will gravitate towards. The combination of a 60MP full-frame sensor, fixed Summilux 28mm f/1.7 lens and rugged weather-sealed body already made the Q3 series one of Leica's most desirable compact cameras to date.
It's especially suited to everyday storytelling, travel, documentary and hybrid content creation, whether you're a professional or an enthusiast. Add the Protector for Q3 Leather Dark Brown and Leica Wrist Strap Leather Braided Black to finish the look off perfectly, while simultaneously protecting the body.
Leica D-Lux 8 Metal Grey
The Leica D-Lux 8 Metal Grey is Leica's most approachable compact and will be popular with beginners, as well as attracting photographers into the Leica ecosystem for the first time. The D-Lux series has a rich history thanks to its compact size, versatile zoom lens and relatively accessible pricing, certainly compared to the Q and M systems.
The new finish gives the D-Lux 8 a premium appearance that aligns it closely with Leica's higher-end cameras, while offering a more accessible ownership experience. Try pairing it with the cognac leather case and braided strap for the ultimate accessory styling.
Leica M11-P Metal Grey
Leica chose the M11-P for this Metal Grey launch, rather than releasing the newer M11 EV1 in grey. The M11-P Metal Grey variant features an engraved top plate, black controls and the optional matching APO Summicron-M 50mm f/2 ASPH lens, which would create one of the most unified Leica M systems in recent history.
All three cameras are based on their originals, with exactly the same technical features, such as the ultra-high-resolution 60MP triple sensor, internal storage capacity and Content Credentials functionality where available.
Leica knows that their photographers often build an attachment that goes well beyond specifications. Usabilty and design are just as important, with colour, finish, materials and accessories that complement the way a camera ages and is used over time.
Leica equipment is also built to last, as we investigate in our post that discusses Why Leica Cameras Are Worth The Cost. This Metal Grey launch is especially interesting because of how comprehensively Leica has applied it across beginner to profssional systems.
Rather than producing another collector release, this seems to be a permanent new look for Leica cameras that is here to stay. Apart from the lens, which you should grab while you can.
Whether you choose the Q3 in Grey, the D-Lux 8 in Grey or the M11-P Grey, these are all cameras designed not only to garner admiring looks, but to help you immerse yourself in the joy of picture making.
