Nikon Z DX 24mm f/1.7 Lens Summary

Despite weighing just 135g, the recently developed Nikon Z DX 24mm f/1.7 Lens for crop sensor mirrorless Z Mount cameras offers an exceptionally bright aperture, which is ideal for all sorts of genres. Its’ 36mm equivalent focal width (full-frame format) lends itself to everything from portraits and landscapes to travel and food photography. It’s also a favourite amongst videographers for the slightly wide, yet standard field of view, which helps to tell a story without distorting the scene. Well-controlled focus breathing contributes to its effectiveness for recording captivating movies without shift in the angle of view as you pull focus.

Nikon has employed nine optical elements, including two aspherical elements for the optical design, which ensures sharp, brilliant results right across the frame. The bright f/1.7 is perfect for handheld shooting in low light, so you can capture fleeting street photography scenes and naturally lit portraits with ease, even in near darkness.

The wide aperture also renders artful bokeh and soft out-of-focus areas, in order to blur your backgrounds and enhance the subject in your frame. This mirrorless Nikon lens is even more versatile thanks to a close focusing distance, which lets you place your subject just 12.4cm from the lens, for impactful close-ups with frame-filling subjects.

Nikon Z DX 24mm f/1.7 Lens in More Detail

Incredibly portable prime for DX cameras

At around 135g this lens pairs with compact crop sensor mirrorless DX cameras perfectly, making it a brilliant walk-around lens for snapshots, candid portraits and snapping anything which inspires. When mounted on a body such as the Nikon Z 50 or super-chic Z Fc you can leave it mounted all day without any noticeable weight, while reaching awkward angles more easily.

Robust design

If you intend to travel or capture content in the great outdoors, anything can happen with the weather, however the Z DX 24mm f/1.7 Lens has you covered thanks to reliable sealing against dust and water droplets. It may be small, but this prime lens is built tough.

Versatile enough for almost anything

With a lens hood included you have the ability to shoot beautiful backlit subjects while keeping your subject sharp and filled with crisp details with minimised ghosting and flare. You can also attach extremely compact 46mm lens filters to adapt to different photo and video situations, such as the Hoya 46mm UX II UV Filter and 46mm UX II PL-CIR Circular Polariser Filter, also from Hoya.

Our Verdict

Nikon is busy expanding their mirrorless lens line-up for crop sensor cameras (DX), with recent launches including the ultra wide Z DX 12-28mm F/3.5-5.6 PZ VR Lens and Z DX 16-50mm F/3.5-6.3 SE VR Silver Edition. However this latest model fills a gap for a compact standard prime lens, which is ideal as a walk around option for everyday photography and videography.

It is impressively lightweight yet houses a unique optical formula, which helps to captures sharp detail, natural colours and distortion-free images. The bright maximum aperture is ideal for handheld shooting, allowing you to capture shallow depth of field subjects such as portraits and street photography on-the-go. It also lets you separate the subject from background distractions, or you can stop down all the way to f/11 and capture pin sharp details in landscapes, which often require a greater depth of field.

The versatility of a standard lens with this focal width cannot be overstated and has been the mainstay of reportage for many decades, which has been enhanced by thoughtful additions such as the minimised focus breathing for video and weather seals for outdoor creators. All of the features and an attractive price ensure Nikon’s Z DX 24mm f/1.7 Lens will be a popular choice for a variety of content creators who enjoy its portability and the beautiful results, which you can achieve.
