Sony FX5 Compact Cinema Line Camera with XLR Handle In More Detail
Renewed Imaging System
The FX5 is a full-frame cinema camera that combines a newly developed 16.6MP back-illuminated full-frame stacked Exmor RS CMOS sensor with the BIONZ XR2 processor with an integrated AI Processing Unit. Faster sensor readout reduces rolling shutter distortion during handheld filming, rapid pans and fast-moving action while providing the processing throughput required for 5K Open Gate recording and frame rates up to 5K 120p and 4K 240p, depending on the selected format.
The BIONZ XR2 processes the high-speed sensor data required for high-resolution recording, advanced autofocus and internal X-OCN RAW recording workflows. This processing capacity enables internal X-OCN recording, professional monitoring tools and responsive operation during high-resolution and high frame rate recording modes.
The BIONZ XR2 processor incorporates an integrated AI Processing Unit, enabling Sony’s latest AI subject recognition autofocus for improved subject detection and tracking.
Recording Formats
The FX5 introduces 5K Open Gate recording in a compact Cinema Line camera, capturing a 5K imaging area in 60p that provides greater flexibility during post-production. Recording in Open Gate allows editors to reframe footage for widescreen, vertical and other aspect ratios from a single master clip, while providing additional scope for image stabilisation, visual effects and anamorphic workflows.
Internal 16-bit X-OCN recording brings Sony’s compressed RAW workflow from BURANO and VENICE into a compact Cinema Line body for the first time. Available in X-OCN LT, C1 and C2 formats, it delivers high image quality with 16-bit depth and greater post-production grading flexibility than conventional recording formats. New X-OCN C1 and C2 options further reduce file sizes compared with X-OCN LT, extending recording times, reducing storage requirements and accelerating file transfers while retaining the advantages of an X-OCN workflow.
Alongside X-OCN, the FX5 supports XAVC recording formats. XAVC All-Intra records every frame independently for editing and visual effects work, while XAVC Long GOP reduces file sizes for longer recording times, allowing recording quality and storage requirements to be matched to each production.
Frame rates up to 5K 120p and 4K 240p, depending on the selected recording format and firmware version, enable high-quality slow-motion capture for cinematic productions.
Image Quality
The FX5 digital cinema camera captures 15+ stops of dynamic range, retaining highlight and shadow detail across high-contrast scenes such as interiors with bright windows, stage lighting and outdoor productions. This supports S-Log3 workflow and helps match footage with BURANO, VENICE and other Cinema Line cameras during colour grading.
Three Base ISO extends low-noise performance beyond conventional dual-base systems with native ISO settings of 800, 4000 and 12800. This allows productions to move between controlled lighting, available light and night scenes while maintaining low noise, dynamic range and colour accuracy.
Dual Gain technology reduces noise in darker image areas while helping expand dynamic range in shadows. Combined with the stacked sensor and BIONZ XR2 processing pipeline, it maintains image quality during demanding recording modes, including 5K capture and frame rates up to 5K 120p and 4K 240p*, depending on the selected recording format.
Support for anamorphic recording allows the FX5 to capture the full Open Gate image with compatible cinema lenses, while expanded real-time de-squeeze monitoring supports 1.3×, 1.5×, 1.6×, 1.8× and 2.0× anamorphic lenses. This preserves the full imaging area while allowing compositions to be monitored accurately on set and simplifying post-production workflows.
Autofocus
The camera includes the BIONZ XR2 processor with an integrated AI Processing Unit for fast hybrid autofocus, using Sony’s latest AI subject recognition technology. It improves subject recognition and tracking for Human, Animal and Bird subjects, helping maintain reliable autofocus during demanding productions.
Subject Recognition Modes
- Auto
- Human
- Human Priority
- Animal
- Bird
- Animal/Bird Priority
These dedicated modes optimise autofocus behaviour for different subjects rather than relying on a single tracking mode. Human Priority maintains focus on people even when other recognised subjects enter the frame, while Animal/Bird Priority improves reliability when filming wildlife.
Low-light autofocus combines the AI Processing Unit, BIONZ XR2 processor and fast sensor readout to maintain reliable subject detection in challenging conditions. This supports dependable continuous AF during high frame rate recording, handheld shooting, gimbal operation and solo camera operation where manual focus pulling may be impractical.
Ergonomics and Operability
The FX5 adopts CineAlta-style operation with features that support handheld shooting, remote productions and solo operators. It uses CineAlta-style menus with dedicated buttons, switches and customisable controls that reduce reliance on menu navigation. Shared operating principles across Sony’s Cinema Line also make it easier to move between the FX5, FX6, BURANO and VENICE in multicam environments.
A 3.5-inch four-axis LCD monitor provides flexible positioning for handheld, tripod, gimbal and low-angle shooting, while maintaining a clear view when accessories such as microphones, cages and external recorders are fitted. Its 16:9 aspect ratio also allows video to be viewed at its native framing without wasting screen area.
5-axis IBIS reduces camera shake during handheld shooting, while Active Mode and Dynamic Active Mode apply additional electronic stabilisation for smoother footage when walking or filming without support equipment. Operators can prioritise maximum image area or greater stabilisation depending on the shot.
Professional Monitoring Tools
Exposure, focus and composition tools previously reserved for Sony’s higher-end digital cinema cameras are included, allowing critical image assessment without relying on an external monitor in many shooting situations.

32-Bit Float Audio
The supplied Sony XLR Handle Unit expands the FX5 with professional audio connectivity through the camera’s Multi Interface Shoe, adding two balanced XLR/TRS inputs with selectable Mic, Line and +48V phantom power for broadcast microphones, wireless receivers and external audio sources. Dedicated physical controls allow independent channel adjustment and rapid changes without navigating camera menus, while the integrated design maintains a compact, well-balanced rig.
The handle supports up to 96kHz, 32-bit float recording, capturing an exceptionally wide dynamic range while reducing the risk of clipped highlights or lost low-level detail compared with conventional fixed-bit recording. This provides greater flexibility when recording unpredictable sound levels such as interviews, live performances and documentary productions, reducing the need for precise manual gain adjustment and preserving more usable audio during post-production.
Professional microphones can be connected directly to the camera without a separate field recorder, simplifying location workflows while keeping picture and sound synchronised in-camera. Combined with the FX5’s internal recording formats, the supplied XLR Handle Unit provides a compact production solution for documentary, ENG, commercial and event filmmaking with fewer external devices, batteries and cables.
Connectivity
Dual CFexpress Type A card slots with SD UHS-II compatibility support relay recording, simultaneous backup recording and separate proxy recording workflows, allowing productions to prioritise recording duration, data security or flexible media management according to the project.
Built-in Wi-Fi 6E (IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n/ac/ax) supports 2.4GHz, 5GHz and 6GHz wireless bands with 2×2 MIMO technology for faster, more stable file transfers and remote camera operation across compatible networks. The camera can operate as either a wireless access point or connect as a station to 6GHz-enabled networks, while 2.5GBASE-T, 1000BASE-T and 100BASE-TX Ethernet support provides high-speed wired networking for demanding production workflows.
Compatibility with Sony’s Monitor & Control (M&C) app enables wireless monitoring, camera control and multicamera operation from a compatible mobile device, supporting location-based and remote productions.
Dual USB-C ports separate camera operation from accessory connectivity, supporting simultaneous data transfer, external device connection and USB Power Delivery without interrupting production. USB-C also supports webcam, live streaming and remote production workflows without additional capture hardware in supported configurations.
System Expansion
Multiple mounting points allow the body to be configured with cages, handles, external monitors, wireless video transmitters, follow focus systems and other production accessories while adapting to different shooting styles.
An optional OLED electronic viewfinder improves viewing in bright outdoor conditions and handheld operation, while an optional Timecode Cable simplifies synchronisation across multicamera productions.
These expansion options allow the FX5 to operate as a compact production camera with integrated professional audio, a B-camera to the FX6, BURANO or VENICE, or a fully configured filmmaking camera with additional accessories.
Reliability and Operation
The FX5 uses the NP-SA100 rechargeable battery, increasing capacity by approximately 30% compared with the FX3. Longer operating times provide up to approximately 170 minutes of continuous recording, reducing battery changes during interviews, live events, commercial productions and extended location shoots while supporting the camera’s increased processing demands.
A redesigned internal thermal management system improves heat dissipation during demanding recording modes, helping maintain stable operation throughout extended takes, high frame rate recording and long continuous productions while reducing the risk of thermal interruptions.
Front and rear tally lamps provide clear confirmation when recording is active, while seven integrated 1/4-20 UNC mounting points around the body simplify attaching cages, monitors, wireless transmitters, microphones and other production accessories.
