Sigma 35mm f/2 DG DN Contemporary Lens For L Mount Summary

Sigma has released the 35mm f/2 DG DN Contemporary lens as one of a trio of compact lightweight primes for full frame Panasonic Lumix and mirrorless Leica cameras. This classic slightly wide, 35mm standard focal width is extremely popular due to versatile and natural looking results, ideal for all day shooting of any number of subjects. For example subjects might include street photography, environmental portraits, weddings and travel, all of which are supported by the fast f/2 aperture.

The 35mm f/2 Contemporary lens offers consistent, high resolving power right across the frame and supports current Lumix and Leica Autofocus features. Focussing is quick and near silent and the lens also features a smooth, quiet aperture ring, lending itself perfectly to video as well as stills photography.

Highlight features:

  • 10 optical elements in 9 groups, with 1 SLD element and 3 aspherical elements
  • Compatible with high-speed Autofocus systems
  • Stepping motor
  • Aperture ring
  • Compatible with lens-based optical correction
  • Focus Mode Switch
  • 9-blade rounded diaphragm
  • High-precision, durable brass bayonet mount with dust and splash-proof structure
  • ‘Made in Japan’ craftsmanship

An all-metal construction with precision cut aluminium parts not only give the lens barrel a sleek, stylish finish, but also provides superb durability for unhindered use.

In Detail

The Sigma 35mm f/2 DG DN Contemporary brings a high level of optical performance even at the maximum aperture of f/2. Axial chromatic aberration is corrected with the inclusion of SLD glass. The placement of high-refractive index elements provides effective correction of various types of aberration, while keeping the amount of glass used to a minimum. This allowed Sigma to keep the lens compact and lightweight at just 325g and 70mm × 65.4mm, an ideal size on a mirrorless camera body.

Advanced production technology is implemented at SIGMA's production site in Japan. Optics include three high-precision glass-moulded aspherical lenses which provide correction of spherical aberration and field curvature for well controlled results. The lens design also provides a very good correction of sagittal coma aberration, making it suitable for capturing fine details required for night sky photography.

Looking to sell your Sigma 35mm f/2 DG DN Contemporary Lens For L Mount?

Our Verdict

Sigma is capitalising on the introduction of numerous full frame Lumix S Series cameras and models such as the Leica SL2 with the 35mm f/2 DG DN Contemporary Lens for L-mount. It brings extremely high build quality as well as high performance optics within a compact 325g. metal structure. The lens is able to render high resolutions as required by powerful full frame sensors and controls distortion and flare admirably across many shooting situations. A stepping motor ensures focussing is quick and near silent, fully compatible with current Lumix and Leica AF systems. The inclusion of an aperture ring (which can be off for Auto control) allows the many filmmakers, vloggers and video enthusiasts to incorporate this lens into their line-up knowing it will perform as required for movies.

The release of the 35mm Contemporary coincides with two other primes lenses for L mount; the 24mm f/3.5 DG DN Contemporary and 65mm f/2 DG DN. All three share fast apertures, similar sizes and weights and are all considerably lighter and more compact than other Sigma lenses. Including weather sealing, a brass lens mount and well thought out barrel controls ensures this model will be extremely popular with L mount users regardless of whether they are enthusiasts or seasoned professionals.
