Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary Lens for Canon RF-S Summary

The Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary Lens for Canon RF-S mount (yes that’s right – Canon RF!) offers high-performance zoom capabilities for crop-sensor mirrorless Canon cameras. This is the very first ever lens from Sigma for the mirrorless RF system, heralding a new era for creators who shoot with an EOS R7, EOS R100, R50, or R10 crop format Canon mirrorless body.

Compact yet robust, the lens provides an equivalent focal length of 27-75mm on an APS-C camera, making it versatile for various photography and videography needs such as landscapes, portraits, street scenes, and architecture.

Its impressive 1:2.8 maximum magnification ratio also allows for macro-style shooting, with frame-filling details and dynamic compositions. Featuring a constant f/2.8 aperture, this 18-50mm f/2.8 lens excels in creating soft, blurred backgrounds, perfect for eye-catching portraits and subject shots. It also gathers plenty of light for low lighting situations, enabling handheld use, even as light levels drop.

Sigma’s stepping motor ensures the autofocus system is both quick and silent, which is ideal for capturing fast-moving subjects or filming videos. At just under 300g this is also particularly lightweight, and exceptionally portable, making it ideal for everyday use while still capable of producing professional-quality images thanks to superior optics, high-speed autofocus, and wide maximum aperture.

Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary Lens for Canon RF-S in More Detail

Features and build quality

The 18-50mm F2.8 lens features an external barrel made from Thermally Stable Composite (TSC), a polymer that shares a similar rate of thermal expansion with aluminium. This ensures that both the TSC exterior and the metal interior of the lens expand and contract uniformly in response to temperature changes, maintaining the integrity and performance of the lens. Additionally, TSC provides the benefits of being lightweight, durable, and having a sleek appearance.

This lens incorporates an internal focus mechanism, maintaining a constant length regardless of changes in the focus distance. This stability is particularly advantageous for gimbal use, as it preserves a consistent centre of gravity, and prevents the front of the lens from rotating during focus adjustments, a crucial feature for photographers using polarising or graduated filters.

Equipped with a stepping motor, the lens offers smooth, rapid, and precise autofocus performance that is ideal for capturing both still images and video. The design includes lighter glass elements in the focus group to enhance AF speed and responsiveness.

Razor sharp optics

Despite being so small the 18-50mm F2.8 DC DN | Contemporary delivers excellent results even when shooting wide open. Corner sharpness and overall contrast is excellent across the frame, with fine detail resolving even the highest resolution Canon cameras.

The lens features an advanced optical design comprised of 13 elements in 10 groups, including 3 aspherical elements and 1 SLD element. These deliver razor-sharp results and work with in-camera digital corrections to eliminate chromatic aberration, flare, distortion and vignetting.

Advanced optical coatings have also been added to reduce flare and ghosting when working in bright direct sunlight, which is especially important at the wider end of the zoom range.

Constant f/2.8 aperture across the zoom

Thanks to its wide aperture across the zoom range the 18-50mm is a great performer in low light environments, which is perfect for photographers who want to shoot in darker conditions without a tripod.

One of the smallest standard zooms on the market has arrived for crop sensor Canon mirrorless cameras! The 18-50mm is a veritable pocketable option that allows you to work harder without sacrificing image quality. It is almost identical in weight to the 30mm F1.4 DC DN | Contemporary for Canon RF-S, a prime lens for crop-cameras with a wide f/1.4 aperture, which is another superb option for portable day-to-day shooting.

Although yet to be launched, the Sigma 10-18mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary Lens for Canon RF-S is also announced, which will complement this standard zoom with a wide angle range.

Versatile for close-up creativity

The 18-50mm from Sigma has a maximum magnification ratio of 1:2.8, giving it a minimum working distance (sensor to the front of the lens) of just 12.1cm. This is ideal for close-up photography, such as food, insects, flowers and other macro-type subjects, extending the versatility to enjoy a single lens across multiple subject types.
