Sigma 10-18mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary Lens for Canon RF-S Summary

The Sigma 10-18mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary Lens for Canon RF-S is the smallest and lightest ultra wide angle zoom lens for APS-C mirrorless cameras in the world. This compact zoom lens offers an effective focal range of 15-27mm (35mm equivalent), and will be available for the first time ever for the Canon mirrorless RF system.

It features razor-sharp optics, which we’ve come to expect from Sigma, and a constant maximum f/2.8 aperture throughout the range, paired with a new push-on petal type lens hood, enabling photographers to capture dynamic images in various lighting conditions.

This compact zoom lens incorporates a unique aspherical element that not only reduces its size but also boosts image quality. It allows for close-up shots with its 11.6cm (1:4) minimum focusing distance, enabling photographers to explore creative compositions with expansive backgrounds and attractive bokeh effects.

Weighing just 260g, equipped with a high-speed AF stepping motor, and exhibiting minimal focus breathing, this is perfect for mounting on a compact gimbal for filmmaking. It's an excellent choice for creating captivating stills or video content for social media, as well as for professional content creation with your Canon crop format camera.

Sigma 10-18mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary Lens for Canon RF-S in More Detail

Build quality features

As with other Sigma lenses, the 10-18mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary has a barrel made from a polymer called Thermally Stable Composite (TSC). As well as being sleek, strong and stylish, the material also has a similar thermal expansion rate to aluminium, meaning that the metal interior of the lens and the TSC exterior behave in the same way as temperatures change.

An internal focus mechanism ensures the lens always remains the same length when the subject distance changes. This makes it well suited to gimbal use due to a relatively constant centre of gravity, and it also means the end of the lens doesn’t rotate when focusing, which is important when shooting with filters.

A stepping motor delivers smooth, fast and accurate AF for both stills and video. It has been designed with lighter glass elements in the focus lens group, which ensures responsive autofocus that is fully compatible with all the latest AF camera technology from Canon. The durable brass mount is surrounded by a rubber seal to help keep out dust and moisture too, resulting in the perfect ultra wide travel lens, which you can also vlog with.

Super sharp optical design

At under 300g this is a lightweight lens, yet the 10-18mm F2.8 DC DN | Contemporary delivers outstanding optical quality at all aperture values, including when shooting wide open. Optical performance is maintained across the entire width of the frame, with fine detail perfectly rendered right into the corners of the image.

The lens has an advanced optical design made up of 13 elements in 10 groups, including 4 aspherical elements, 1 SLD element and 3 FLD elements. These deliver razor-sharp results and work with in-camera digital corrections to eliminate chromatic aberration, flare, distortion and vignetting.

Sigma’s Super Multi-Layer Coatings help to reduce flare and ghosting when working in bright direct sunlight, which is especially important at the wider end of the zoom range.

Great for close-up content

The 10-18mm lens has a maximum magnification ratio of 1:4, giving it a minimum working distance (sensor to the front of the lens) of just 11.6cm. This makes it well-suited to close-up photography to capture subjects like food, insects, flowers and other macro-type subjects.

High end distortion control

Lens distortion is virtually eliminated across the whole zoom range, ensuring straight lines, such as the horizon or the sides of tall buildings, remain perfectly straight. This is achieved thanks to a combination of optical correction and in-camera digital correction.

Complementary lenses

When paired with the previously launched Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary Lens for Canon RF-S creators gain a lightweight duo of portable zooms covering ultra wide to short telephoto ranges. Between these two lenses you can capture virtually any subject including video, and travel.
