Our Verdict

The classic design of the Voigtländer Nokton 40mm f/1.2 Aspherical SE Lens for Sony addresses a rise in some photographers wanting to revert to an immersive manual focus experience when capturing their subjects. Voigtländer makes manual focus only lenses, with this model adding to their growing line-up designed purely for E-mount as this type of user-base expands. Nokton aspherical lenses are able to capture impressive sharpness thanks to the optical design with results showing excellent clarity.

Whether you enjoy shooting portraits, street photography or general images, the 40mm f/1.2 consistently delivers with it’s bright 10-bladed aperture. Out of focus areas are smooth and pleasing helping to isolate your subject and play with depth of field. With f/1.2 available you can also work in extremely low lighting, ideal for standard focal width subjects for which the lens is designed.

A minimum focus distance of 0.35 m (35 cm) provides a range of options to capture subjects which are closer in the frame, adding some versatility to this bright standard prime. The lens design itself has a solid feeling all-metal black casing with eight glass elements contained within (arranged into six groups). This balances onto Sony cameras well, whether full frame or crop sensor models enhancing the classic user experience. If you do enjoy manual focusing with pin sharp results on a standard slightly wide focal length, this makes an excellent choice that will provide years of enjoyable service.
