Voigtlander 50mm f/1.2 Nokton SE ASPH Lens for Sony E Mount Summary

With some incredibly well received lenses already available for Sony E mount, the latest 50mm f/1.2 Nokton SE ASPH Lens has arrived with some big shoes to fill. It manages just that with aplomb whilst communicating through electronic contacts with any Sony Alpha camera. This includes recording EXIF data, utilising focus peaking and focus magnification functions as well as harnessing Sony’s 5-axis in body stabilisation. This helps to stabilise the lens when hand-holding during slower exposures and the results are spectacular from this prime standard 50mm lens.

Features at a glance

  • Comprehensive electronic communication with Alpha cameras
  • excellent rendering and sharpness from two aspherical elements and one partial dispersion element
  • Well controlled image results with low distortion and minimal aberrations
  • Extremely bright f/1.2 aperture
  • 12-bladed diaphragm produces smooth out of focus bokeh when desired

With an ultra bright f/1.2 aperture photographers who work during low light, or perhaps shoot naturally lit portraits will benefit from the lens’ light gathering capabilities. Other subjects where the Voigtlander 50mm f/1.2 Nokton excels include street photography, general purpose shooting as well as portraits, travel and more specialised subjects. Videographers will love this model due to the ability for them to set the aperture ring to be silent and stepless. This provides silent exposure adjustments while filming or when making stills in a quiet environment.

It can take a little while to master manual focussing, particularly when capturing fast moving subjects. The Voigtlander prime responds excellent to manual input and users can achieve absolutely pin sharp results from edge to edge with this option. Our Verdict

Voigtlander are experiencing a recent surge in popularity with photographers and videographers once again appreciating the benefits of a manual focus lens. At first it can be daunting as we have become so reliant on AF lenses, however the 50mm f/1.2 Nokton SE ASPH provides such superb results when focus is nailed it becomes more enticing with every outing. A 50mm prime is always of use to most photographers and video makers, with so many subjects falling into the standard category. With a lens of this standing we tend to look for excuses to pack it into our bags at every opportunity whatever we happen to be shooting that day.

The experience of using such a solid, well crafted optic is also a joy with the lens sitting perfectly on full frame Sony bodies, although it will work perfectly with an APS-C sized sensor camera. Results are as compelling as the shooting experience with sharp well controlled images standing up to any scrutiny. Highly detailed images are also a breeze for this lens with its’ high resolving power and specialist optical design. If you are the type of photographer or videographer who enjoys composing and shooting whilst being completely present in the moment, this could be the perfect lens to seduce you. We also throughly recommend the Voigtlander 65mm f/2 Macro Apo-Lanthar for those wanting a slightly longer prime with macro capabilities.
