Sony FX3 Full Frame Cinema Line Camera (Updated 2025) Summary

Updated by Sony in May 2025, the Sony FX3 Full Frame Cinema Camera (ILME-FX3A) continues to offer solo creators powerful full-frame cinematic capabilities from its compact, user-friendly design. The body now features an improved 3-inch XGA LCD screen, which is inherited from the FX30, which provides even better image clarity when monitoring the scene, playing back footage or navigating menus.

Alongside this upgrade Sony now includes a BC-ZD1 dual battery charger in the box, which will help to streamline workflows for creators who require multiple batteries for all-day shooting sessions. Please note that a USB-C cable and power cord are no longer supplied with the camera, and the FX3 no longer features NFC or an infrared remote receiver.

Otherwise the FX3 remains a fundamental model within Sony’s Cinema Line, with its combination of hybrid Alpha imaging technology and features focussed on video professionals. With 12.1 megapixels on a fast readout full-frame back-illuminated Exmor R sensor, the FX3 captures stunning 4K video up to 120p with 15+ stops of dynamic range. Internal 10-bit 4:2:2 recording, S-Cinetone colour profile and dual CFexpress Type A/SD slots deliver a high degree of versatility and reliability, which working solo creators and production teams require.

Thanks to its active cooling system, five-axis in-body stabilisation with up to 5.5 stops, and extensive firmware upgrades, which include Cine EI Quick, User LUT imports and Timecode sync, the FX3 continues to be one of the most capable and comprehensively featured pro video cameras available today.

Sony FX3 Full Frame Cinema Line Camera in More Detail

Sony FX3 Lens Options

The FX3 is compatible with Sony E-mount lenses and there are plenty of high-quality models to choose from, as well as Cine specific options like Sony’s FE C 16-35mm T3.1 cine lens. The body has also been designed with an integral cage allowing the supplied XLR handle to be attached along with other 1/4-20 UNC screw-mounted accessories. Connectivity is provided by WiFi, Wired LAN via an adapter and USB-C connection for easy data transfers.

The handle of the FX3 includes two independent full-size XLR connectors (XLR/TRS combo) to connect external professional microphones through a digital audio interface via the Multi Interface (MI) Shoe. Three recording formats can be selected, including 24-bit 4-channel.

FX3 for Cinematic image quality

The Sony FX3 Camera delivers full-frame cinematic performance from a compact body that’s perfect for handheld and use with a gimbal stabiliser. In May 2025, Sony updated the FX3 with a sharper 3-inch 1024×768 LCD monitor—offering clearer image review and improved menu navigation—and upgraded the battery charger to the BC-ZD1 dual battery model. Please note that the new version no longer includes a USB-C cable, infrared remote receiver, or NFC.

Premium image quality from a full-frame Exmor R CMOS sensor

At the heart of the FX3 is a high-speed 12.1MP back-illuminated full-frame CMOS sensor, which is paired with Sony’s capable BIONZ XR image processor. Together, these components deliver exceptional low-light performance, wide dynamic range (15+ stops in S-Log3), and high-speed readout for minimal rolling shutter, which is especially important for capturing moving subjects or panning with the camera.

The FX3 supports internal 10-bit 4:2:2 recording across a variety of professional codecs including XAVC S-I, XAVC HS, and XAVC S, with support for 4K at up to 120fps, and Full HD at up to 240fps. For maximum versatility, it also outputs 16-bit RAW via HDMI to an external video recorder. Signature Slow and Quick Motion shooting is fully supported, with frame rates from 1fps to 120fps, which is ideal for B-roll, time-lapse, or cinematic slow motion effects within storytelling sequences.

Professional Video Features

Users can shoot with full creative control thanks to the included S-Cinetone, S-Log3, and HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) picture profiles. Custom LUTs can also be uploaded for accurate monitoring on the camera’s new 3-inch touchscreen or via an external monitor. Gamma curve options include Cine1-4, ITU709, S-Log2/3, and more.

Image stabilisation is built into the body, with a 5-axis sensor-shift system plus Active Mode for enhanced handheld recording, even without a stabiliser. When combined with Sony’s Catalyst software, metadata-based stabilisation further improves footage in post.

The FX3 includes dual CFexpress Type A / SD UHS-II card slots, enabling simultaneous recording, auto-switching, or sorting between media types, which makes it easier to backup footage or capture separate formats for editing workflows.

Autofocus and Audio Capabilities

Sony’s advanced Fast Hybrid AF system offers 759 phase-detection points for stills and 627 for video, with subject tracking and Real-time Eye AF for humans and animals. Focus area settings include wide, zone, centre, flexible spot, and tracking, with full AF/MF toggle options. Touch tracking is also supported via the updated LCD interface, which is pa feature which many users are drawn to for its simplicity.

Audio is captured through dual internal microphones or via the supplied XLR handle unit, which adds professional 3-pin XLR/TRS inputs and a cold shoe mount. The handle is ideal for rig-free shooting while capturing high-quality sound on-location.

Updated for 2025

The latest upgrades to the FX3 (version ILME-FX3A) includes the BC-ZD1 dual battery charger, which replaces the previous single-slot charger. However, the FX3 no longer includes a USB-C cable or power cord, and Sony has removed the infrared receiver and NFC module to streamline the camera body design, while keeping it inline with contemporary expectations.

The upgraded LCD screen matches the FX30’s screen, which is a bright, higher-resolution 1.44M-dot touch panel in a 4:3 XGA format. This makes it easier to navigate menus, confirm focus, and monitor your footage more clearly, which is particularly useful in solo setups where there is no additional external screen.

With up to 51 minutes of 4K/60p continuous recording, a durable magnesium alloy body, and seamless integration with Sony’s Catalyst software and accessories, the FX3 is one of the most compelling cinema cameras for solo filmmakers.

Our Verdict

The Sony FX3 is one the most accessible Cinema Line cameras in Sony’s lineup, and with the 2025 update, it’s even more refined. The addition of a higher resolution LCD screen makes framing, playback, and menu navigation more accurate, especially for solo shooters who don’t use an external monitor or recorder. The inclusion of a BC-ZD1 dual charger adds greater convenience for those who shoot with multiple batteries, though it’s worth noting that a USB-C cable and power cord are no longer included in the box.

Despite these minor hardware changes, the FX3 continues to deliver the same full-frame cinematic output that has made it a go-to choice for independent filmmakers, YouTubers, and creative professionals. Its fast readout 12.1MP sensor produces outstanding results in low light, with 15+ stops of dynamic range, minimal rolling shutter, and support for S-Cinetone, S-Log3, and even RAW output via HDMI. Sony’s Fast Hybrid AF, complete with Eye AF and custom tracking, enables smooth and cinematic handheld shooting, even when you run and gun, thanks to IBIS and Digital IS capabilities.

An internal fan allows for uninterrupted 4K/60p recording, while metadata from the 5-axis image stabilisation system integrates with Sony’s Catalyst software for even smoother results during the editing process. The FX3’s body is lightweight but scalable too, offering multiple 1/4-inch mounts for cages, rigs, and accessories, along with a detachable top handle that features professional dual XLR inputs for high-quality audio recording.

This small but powerful cinema line camera proves you don’t need a huge setup to create professional-quality video. If you’re using an older Alpha camera body or looking to upgrade to a Cinema Line model, the FX3 offers exceptional value for advanced creators.
