Sigma 35mm f/1.2 DG DN Art Lens for Sony in detail

Sigma's First f/1.2 maximum aperture, large-diameter prime lens

The "Art line in the age of mirrorless cameras" pursues ultimate performance as a large-diameter lens with a focal length of 35mm and also achieves a maximum aperture of f/1.2. Three SLD glass elements and three aspherical lenses including a double-sided aspherical lens are optimally arranged in a lens construction of 17 elements in 12 groups. In addition to the optical design that makes use of the characteristic of the short flange focal length, it effectively takes advantage of the correction function inside the camera to correct distortion and peripheral illumination. Various aberrations that are difficult to correct by post-processing, such as sagittal coma flare, are thoroughly corrected by the compilation of the optical design technologies that Sigma has cultivated, achieving an overwhelming resolution that can resolve over 50 million pixels.

High operability that supports various shooting situations in both still and video

In autofocus photography, comfortable shooting for a f/1.2 large-diameter lens is achieved by the large Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) that gets desired torque required to drive the focus lens group. In manual focus photography, the focus ring driven by the focus-by-wire system with the optimised torque setting responds to fine operations of the photographer. The aperture ring is also mounted with a de-click function for removing clicks, enabling seamless operations that are especially useful during video shooting.

Substantial functions enable user confidence, even in tough environments

The AFL button which can be assigned with various functions widens the range of operations available on the lens. Furthermore, the lens features a dust- and splash-proof structure, along with a water- and oil-repellent coating on the frontmost surface of the lens, which further supports shooting in various environments.

Looking to sell your Sigma 35mm f/1.2 DG DN Art Sony FE-Mount Lens?

Our Verdict

This 35mm f/1.2 DG DN Art Lens is a slightly wide angle lens for Sony full frame mirrorless cameras, which has been created by Sigma in the ‘pursuit of the ultimate image quality’. With their brightest ever prime lens aperture of f/1.2 and now legendary Art-Series optics it impresses with resolving power capable of harnessing the details on high resolution cameras like the a7R iv. This is not a result of wizardry but through a complex design which includes 17 elements in 12 groups with three SLD elements and three aspherical lenses including a double-sided aspherical lens. The hypersonic motor is extremely responsive and will keep up with tracking subjects including eyes and faces as well as provide smooth video tracking. The aperture ring can have the audible click switched off to further the appeal for videographers and content creators.

As we have come to expect from Sigma lenses, they’ve employed dust and moisture resistance as well as oil and water repellent front element coatings. The Super Multi-Layer Coating also reduces flare and ghosting which is ideal on a lens of this type where we would expect some backlit subjects now and again. An 11-bladed round diaphragm tops off the bokeh qualities which the f/1.2 aperture highlights and users can expect extremely pleasing results when wide open. This is a professional quality lens which appeals to those seeking the pinnacle of optical quality from Sigma. Of course this lens may fall out of reach for some users, however as luck would have it they have recently updated the Art f/1.4 lens which we also have available here: 35mm f/1.4 DG DN Art for Sony.
