Fujifilm X-E5 Review

Fujifilm has been on a tear in recent years, not just with the runaway success of the X100 compact series, but with a string of hugely successful launches across the board. From medium format to the recent pocketable X half, there’s no sign of any slowing down either.

The only question was when we’d see a new APS-C format X-E camera, but that wait is now over, and you should prepare to be impressed once again, as you’ll discover in our Fujifilm X-E5 review.

Fujifilm X-E5 Hands On Video Review by Gareth

The X-E5 camera arrives four years after its predecessor, and it combines the full force of Fujifilm’s latest imaging tech with a beautifully compact, interchangeable-lens body. Highlights include many firsts for the X-E range and for Fujifilm as a whole, with the latest AI-driven hybrid autofocus system, up to 7.0-stops of IBIS, a new dedicated Film Simulation dial. And of course, there’s the oh-so refined styling, including the first machined aluminium top plate from Fujifilm ever, which is a very nice touch.

In this post, we share our hands-on Fujifilm X-E5 video review from Gareth, a comprehensive specs comparison with the X-E4, sample images from the Valencia launch, pricing and kit options, plus details about the new compact XF 23mm f/2.8 R WR lens that joins the camera at launch.

So let’s get into it, whether you’re here for the specs, the styling, or just want to know what makes this camera such a vibe, we’ve got you covered.

What’s New in the Fujifilm X-E5?

The Fujifilm X-E5 is perhaps the biggest generational leap we’ve seen in the X-E line. For all intents and purposes this is the interchangeable lens version of the X100VI, except it adds a few tricks of its own. The refined body includes an updated ergonomic design with a subtle built-in grip, a newly added control lever, and a dedicated Film Simulation dial, giving users quicker, more intuitive control while keeping the familiar minimalist layout.

Did we mention the design, which is reminiscent of rangefinder cameras? Yes, because it’s beautiful!

With the very latest imaging tech from Fujifilm and a more refined shooting experience, this camera is much more than a lick of paint and perfect for a variety of users who love the X-series’ look and feel, but want the flexibility to swap lenses.

Key upgrades include:

  • 40.2MP X-Trans CMOS 5 HR sensor and X-Processor 5
  • 5-axis IBIS unit offering up to 7.0 stops (centre)
  • Intelligent subject-detection autofocus, with deep learning recognition
  • New Classic Display mode in the EVF, inspired by film-era viewfinders
  • Customisable control lever for quick access to digital teleconverter, view modes and more
  • Digital teleconverter (1.4x / 2.0x) for multiple framing options without changing lenses

Combined, these updates elevate the X-E5 alongside flagship X series cameras, while hanging on to its ultra portable and stylish form. Next, let’s take a look at how the X-E5 compares to its predecessor, the X-E4, in a more detailed specs breakdown.

Lifestyle image of the new Fujifilm X-E5 on ropes

Premium Looks with a Practical Design

Fujifilm cameras often manage to strike a balance that few other cameras manage between classic styling, and features that cater to the way storytellers work today, and the X-E5 continues this effortlessly. It draws from the elegance of film-era rangefinders, complete with an offset electronic viewfinder and dial layout, but adds modern touches that make it not only relevant in 2025, but even more desirable.

For the first time in an X Series body, the top plate is carved from a single block of aluminium. This precision-machined surface feels premium in the hand, catching the light with a subtle sheen, while the newly added subtle grip offers improved comfort without ruining the X-E’s slim profile.

Tactile dials and the new Film Simulation dial provide quick, physical control, which is something that you just don’t get with touchscreen-only setups. A tasteful rope-style strap is also included in the box, complementing the low-key look, whether it’s sitting on your desk or hanging from a shoulder.

This is another camera from Fujifilm, which is made for anyone who values how their gear looks and feels, not just how it performs.

While the viewfinder isn’t a hybrid like the X-Pro series, it does introduce Classic Display mode, which mimics the clean, uncluttered interface of traditional cameras, placing only essential info at the bottom, so you can stay immersed in the moment. Sounds tempting, but is it for you?

Who is the X-E5 For?

The Fujifilm X-E5 hits a sweet spot between style and substance, with the kind of performance creators want, without the size or baggage. It’s a lightweight, rangefinder-style digital camera that appeals to:

  1. Style-conscious photographers who want a beautiful accessory that also happens to take incredible photos
  2. Casual vloggers and travel creators looking for something more enjoyable than a phone
  3. Enthusiasts and craftspeople who appreciate manual dials, top-notch image quality, and a portable format
  4. Enthusiasts and professionals who want a camera for downtime, holidays, or when they simply want to enjoy photography again
  5. Affluent users who may not shoot every day but want gear that feels special when they do

Whether you’re coming from a phone, an X100VI, or a medium format system, the X-E5 may just fit naturally into your world. It’s compact enough to take anywhere, yet still offers the many benefits of being able to switch lenses.

For many, this won’t replace a main camera or phone, instead it’ll live beside them. It’s the one you reach for when inspiration hits, when style matters, or when you simply want to enjoy the process of shooting again.

Should You Choose the X-E5 Over the X100VI?

Fujifilm fans may wonder whether they should go for the fixed-lens magic of the X100VI or the flexibility of the X-E series. With the launch of the X-E5, that question has become even more interesting.

Why X100VI fans might consider an X-E5

If you love the X100VI’s look, feel and results but wish you could swap lenses occasionally, the X-E5 might be your ideal compromise. It offers the same 40.2MP sensor and powerful image processor, but adds lens choices, so you can shoot wide one day and short telephoto the next, which is something the X100VI can’t do.

Why some might still prefer the X100VI

There’s no denying the charm of a camera that’s always ready, with one lens that does it all. The X100VI also has a hybrid viewfinder, and a slightly slimmer body with a leaf shutter for flash users. If you never want to think about gear choices, the simplicity of the X100VI is hard to beat.

Why some users will want both

We know plenty of creators who might use the X-E5 as a second camera, whether for travel, a different focal length, or simply because it matches their personal style. In truth, these cameras complement each other well.

An Everyday Prime in the new XF 23mm f/2.8 R WR

If the X-E5 is about freedom and flexibility, the brand new XF 23mm f/2.8 R WR lens makes sure it always feels that way. This is an ultra-compact, almost pancake-style weather-resistant prime, and it’s an ideal match for Fujifilm’s newest X camera.

It weighs just 90g, yet delivers impressive sharpness across the frame, even on the high-resolution 40.2MP sensor. The 35mm equivalent field of view (full-frame) hits the sweet spot for lots of photographers, and it can be used for street photography, travel, food shots, and everyday storytelling. It’s the type of lens you leave on your camera without second guessing it, because it just works in almost any scene.

Finished in silver or black to suit your camera, it complements the X-E5’s design, creating a minimalist setup that still packs pro-level image quality. Whether you’re heading to brunch or out for golden hour sunsets, the new 23mm prime is ready for anything.

The Fujifilm X-E5 is more than just a camera, it’s a statement piece that can fit into your life. From its refined rangefinder-inspired design to high-performance technology, it delivers the kind of experience that makes you want to pick it up, whether you’re planning a dedicated shoot or just heading out for coffee.

It’s the perfect fit for a lot of creators who care how their camera looks on a shelf, on a strap, or in the shot, and those who want great results without the weight of bigger systems.

This isn’t just a tool for enthusiasts. It’s for anyone with a story to tell. One thing’s for sure, I definitely want one, I just need to decide between the black and the silver. How about you?
