Fujifilm X-T30 Hands On First Look

Fujifilm X-T30

Introducing the brand new Fujifilm X-T30, a brand new compact, lightweight mirrorless camera from Fujifilm. Like the X-T20, this is a great lifestyle camera, perfect for travel or everyday use. It borrows a lot from the X-T3 but it has a lot of its own great features as well.

FUJIFILM X-T30 VIDEO REVIEW

IMAGE QUALITY

The Fujifilm X-T30 has the same sensor as the X-T3, a 26.1 Megapixel APS-C X-TRANS 4 CMOS sensor and it gives you lovely, rich, detailed pictures. As you would expect from Fujifilm, the colours are beautiful straight out of camera.

It’s also the world's first back illuminated APS-C sensor which makes it surprisingly good for low light shooting.

I was so happy with the quality of image I was able to get, even shooting JPEG with this camera. In particular, something that stuck out to me was the tone and colour that I was able to get. Fujifilm are known for having great colours and this camera is certainly no exception.

VIDEO

The X-T3 was already an extremely competent video system and Fujifilm have retained many of the video specs for the X-T30 as well. You’ll get 4K at up to 30 frames per second and this is oversampled from 6K so the quality is fantastic.

In addition to that, you can shoot FullHD 1080p at up to 120 frames per second giving you the ability to get nice, smooth slow motion.

It’s worth noting as well that it can output via HDMI at 4:2:2 10-bit.

The X-T30 has extremely impressive video capabilities and when you consider the size of the camera, this would make a great second camera for any videographer and it’s a perfect camera for someone looking to get into video.

AUTOFOCUS

One area where the X-T30 has had a big upgrade is the autofocus. The face and eye tracking have both been improved, it’s now a lot quicker and smoother and locks on extremely well. This works in both movie recording and stills.

There’s also a face select mode which allows you to choose from multiple subjects in view and tell the camera which one to track.

It still has 100% coverage, just like the X-T3 but now, the AF will work down to -3ev. Speed is also something that has been improved and it’s actually around 300% faster at changing from near to far or far to near thanks to the non stop phase detection autofocus. This was easily noticeable while we were out shooting.

LOOK AND FEEL

Much like the X-T20 and the X-T3, this is a beautiful camera, there’s something about the way that Fujifilm cameras look that I love and it’s no different here.

Fujifilm have added a new grip shape for this camera and actually, for such a small camera, it feels really nice. It’s never going to be as nice as a larger camera simply due to the size but for such a compact camera, it’s feels nice in the hands.

Size and weight have clearly been important when designing this camera and this even extends to the touch screen at the back which now sports a thinner design giving you a nice, flat rear design on the camera. It also helps with the weight and overall size, keeping it nice and compact.

Ultimately, I’m seriously impressed with this camera. I love shooting with the X-T3 and this camera has taken so many of the same great features, added in it’s own upgrades and put it all into a lovely, small package.

There’s an old saying that the best camera is the one you have with you and this camera is so easy to just put in your bag when you head out the door that it’s easy for this to become the camera you have with you.
