Canon EOS 77D vs Canon EOS 800D Review

The Canon EOS 77D and Canon EOS 800D were recently announced alongside Canon's latest mirrorless camera, the EOS M6. Now in stock and available to buy at Park Cameras, you may be wondering what the differences between the EOS 77D and EOS 800D are. Under the surface, these two cameras are identical, but it's what's on the outside that makes the difference.

What's different between the EOS 77D & EOS 800D?

Before we get into what the differences are between the Canon EOS 800D and the Canon EOS 77D, let's first have a look at what the similarities are.

Internally, these cameras are the same. They share the same sensor, same ISO sensitivity, same frames per second continuous shooting, same Full HD movie recording... the list goes on...

  • 24.2 megapixel APS-C CMOS Sensor
  • DIGIC 7 image processor
  • 5-axis in-body image stabilisation
  • 6 fps continuous shooting
  • Bright optical viewfinder
  • Vari-angle screen with the world’s quickest Live View AF system
  • Focuses in as little as 0.03 seconds
  • Full 1080p HD movies
  • Dual Pixel CMOS AF for tracking subjects and smooth focusing
  • HDR Movie Shooting
  • Wi-Fi & always-on Low-Energy Bluetooth connectivity
  • Remote Control the camera via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth
  • Connect to Android devices using NFC

If you were to point these two cameras at the same subject matter, with identical settings and the same lens, they will deliver the same image, but the important difference between the Canon EOS 77D and 800D is the process by which you arrive at that final image.

The purpose, and usability of the EOS 77D and EOS 800D are completely different. As you can see from these comparison images, the 800D doesn't have an LCD screen on the top plate, and the rear controls are different, with the addition of an AF back-focus button on the 77D, as well as a lock switch.

Doing without a screen on top of the 800D means that it is designed for those photographers who are maybe stepping up from a mirrorless or compact camera, or are just starting out with interchangeable lens cameras. If you want a camera that you can still use the auto function on, but can also begin to explore manual settings, use different lenses, and get creative with your photography, then the 800D is the camera for you.

However, if you're a little more experienced, or you're moving up from an EOS 750D or similar camera, and you're looking for a DSLR that is designed for more professional use, with an AF backfocus button for quick and custom focusing, such as during weddings and events, a more comprehensive and easy-access system on the back, and a screen on top for easy viewing and changing of the main camera settings, then the EOS 77D should be your camera of choice.

These are the biggest differences between the Canon EOS 77D and EOS 800D - they allow you to explore your creativity and push your photography boundaries in different ways, depending on where you are on the photographic learning spectrum.
