Viltrox AF 50mm f/1.4 Pro Lens for Nikon Z Mount Summary
The Viltrox AF 50mm f/1.4 Pro Lens for Nikon Z Mount is a full-frame standard prime that is a pro-grade option from the Viltrox line-up. It combines a fast f/1.4 aperture with a 15 element, 11 group optical design, which aims to deliver high resolution results across the frame, even when shooting wide open.
The 50mm focal length provides a natural 46.6° angle of view, which is well suited to portraits, street photography, landscapes and general-purpose everyday shooting. A minimum focus distance of 0.45m supports close-up images, while the 11-blade aperture produces smooth background defocus and rounded point light sources.
Viltrox’s Dual HyperVCM autofocus motors deliver fast, quiet focusing with support for face and eye detection on compatible camera bodies. The metal, weather-sealed body, with a brass mount and 77mm filter thread ensure this is a durable, well built pro option for Nikon mirrorless camera users.

Optics and image quality
The optical formula uses 15 elements in 11 groups to render details from the centre frame to the edges. One ultra-precision aspherical element reduces distortion, coma and onion-ring artefacts in out-of-focus highlights. Three extra-low dispersion elements limit axial and lateral chromatic aberration, helping control colour fringing in high-contrast scenes. Eight high refractive elements support consistent sharpness across the frame while keeping overall size at 84.5mm in diameter and 113mm in length.
Even wide open at f/1.4 the lens maintains usable edge detail, which complements high-resolution sensors. Stopping down increases uniformity further, supporting landscape and studio subjects which demand edge-to-edge sharpness.
Aperture and low-light capabilities
The f/1.4 maximum aperture allows faster shutter speeds and lower ISO in low light environments. Depth of field is shallow at closer distances, and the 11-blade diaphragm keeps out-of-focus areas rounded as the lens is stopped down. The 0.45m minimum focusing distance enables classic portrait framing to bring out the subject’s details.
Autofocus for hybrid creators
The Dual HyperVCM system moves the internal focusing group quickly and quietly. This supports stills shooting with face and eye detection and maintains smooth transitions for video. Focus breathing is kept to a minimum, which helps framing during focus pulls.
Build and handling
The lens barrel is made from forged aluminium alloy with weather sealing against dust and splashes. The front element includes water and smudge-resistant coatings. Controls support pro workflows, with a customisable Fn button, a click switch for aperture operation and a dedicated AF/MF switch, while a USB-C port enables firmware updates.
The 77mm filter thread accepts common ND, polarising and other lens filters, and the brass-plated mount contributes to long-term durability.
