Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG II Art Lens for Sony E Summary

The Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG II Art Lens for Sony E is the next-generation large-aperture wide-angle prime for full-frame mirrorless cameras. It replaces the previous DG DN version in Sigma’s Art line of Sony E mount lenses, and continues the long-standing 35mm f/1.4 lineage, prioritising optical performance over smaller Contemporary lens designs.

This focal length remains a key choice for subjects including documentary, wedding, portrait and environmental photography, offering a natural field of view with good subject separation at f/1.4. The updated DG II model features a redesigned optical system and a more compact design, bringing the lens into closer alignment with current Sony mirrorless bodies.

With a 67mm filter thread, weather-resistant structure and full manual control via an aperture ring and AFL buttons, the Sigma 35mm Art supports both stills and video content creation in a body that is smaller and lighter than before.

Overview and Key Improvements

The Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG II Art includes a fully redesigned optical and mechanical structure compared to the previous generation.

The optical design now consists of 15 elements in 12 groups, including four aspherical elements and two SLD elements. This redesign improves edge-to-edge resolution when shooting wide open at f/1.4 and provides stronger suppression of axial chromatic aberration, particularly in high-contrast areas.

Physically, the lens is approximately 14% shorter and 20% lighter than the previous DG DN model. In this Sony E-mount version, it weighs 525g, improving balance on most regular mirrorless camera bodies.

Autofocus is now driven by Sigma’s dual HLA system, delivering faster and quieter focus actuation. Focus breathing has also been reduced, making framing changes during focus pulls less noticeable while recording video.

A newly developed Advanced Amorphous Coating reduces flare and ghosting in backlit conditions, improving contrast when shooting towards strong light sources.

Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG II Art Lens for Sony E in More Detail

Refined Art Series Optical Design

The DG II includes a redesigned optical system. It incorporates aspherical and SLD elements to improve correction of axial chromatic aberration and maintain resolution across the frame, when shooting wide open at f/1.4.

The 35mm focal length provides a 63.4° angle of view on full-frame Sony cameras, offering a natural perspective suited to documentary, environmental portraiture and wedding or event photography.

Resolution is consistent from centre to edge at maximum aperture, and aberration control reduces colour fringing both in the focus plane and in defocused areas, resulting in cleaner highlight transitions.

The lens features an 11-blade rounded diaphragm, which maintains circular aperture when stopping down. This supports smooth defocus rendering and consistent highlight shape, for bokehlicious results.

Minimum aperture is f/16, providing additional depth-of-field control when required, although users should note that diffraction may occur at very narrow apertures.

Close Focus and Framing

The minimum focusing distance is 28cm, with a maximum magnification ratio of 1:5.4.

This allows for closer framing than earlier 35mm f/1.4 lenses and enables subject separation at closer working distances. For detail-oriented portraiture, product photography or environmental close-ups, the shorter focusing distance expands compositional flexibility.

Autofocus, Video and control

Autofocus is driven by Sigma’s dual HLA (High-response Linear Actuator) system, found in premium models such as the updated Sigma 35mm F1.2 DG II | Art lens. The twin linear motors move the focus group with speed and low operational noise, supporting stills photography and video recording.

Focus breathing has been reduced through optimisation of the focus group arrangement and aspherical design. This minimises visible angle-of-view shifts during focus pulls, maintaining more stable framing in video.

The lens includes two AFL buttons, a manual aperture ring, an aperture lock switch and a click on/off mechanism. The click switch allows smooth aperture transitions during filming.

Construction, Handling and Durability

The Sony E version weighs 525g and uses a 67mm filter thread.

Compared to the previous generation, the barrel is approximately 14% shorter and 20% lighter, improving handling on Sony mirrorless bodies.

Construction combines aluminium and TSC (Thermally Stable Composite), which maintains dimensional stability across temperature changes. The lens features dust- and splash-resistant sealing and a water- and oil-repellent coating on the front element.

A supplied petal-type hood with locking mechanism reduces stray light and attaches securely.

Our Verdict

The Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG II Art for Sony E refines one of the most important focal lengths in photography. The updated optical design improves resolution at f/1.4 and aberration control, which will be noticeable for professionals who produce prints, shoot commercial work or create high-resolution hybrid content.

For hybrid creators, the reduced focus breathing, quiet dual HLA autofocus and de-clickable aperture ring make it a great choice for video. The improved flare resistance also adds image consistency when shooting in mixed or backlit lighting.

Perhaps one of the most practical improvements is the reduction in size and weight. At 525g, this version is easier to carry during all day shooting, for street and in the studio without compromising the Art-series optical character expected from a fast 35mm f/1.4.

For advanced enthusiasts and working professionals, this generation prime lens is more refined, more balanced and better suited to modern mirrorless content creation.
