Course Overview

The aim of this course is to explain how best to use your Nikon D500, to navigate the comprehensive menu display and to give the photographer more confidence in exploring the wide range of manual controls available.

Topics Covered

As a guide we intend covering the following during the appropriate sessions:

  • Navigation of all the external button controls and internal menu’s 
  • Focusing – Introduction to the new AF system, single point, 25, 72 & 153 point focusing 
  • Dynamic  Auto area, Dynamic and Single focus point.
  • Recommended setup of the camera for different shooting scenarios – Sport, Wildlife etc.
  • Exposure modes explained Programmed, TV, AV, & Manual 
  • Use of AF Fine Tune to calibrate lenses for optimum sharpness and compatibility (used to eradicate front  and back issues) NOTE this only works for prime lenses, zoom lenses have to be calibrated for either end of the zoom
  • Use of the built in Wifi / Snapbridge & NFC for camera / smart phone / tablet connectivity
  • Use of the 3.2” touch enable screen to control focus and other camera / playback functions
  • Use of the new 4K video recording capability 
  • Metering modes explained including Matrix, Centre Weighted and Spot 
  • Resolution / Image quality settings – Jpeg & Raw (NEF)
  • ISO Film speed selection – Auto and manual ISO sensitivity & appropriate set up
  • White Balance explained – AWB vs Manual White Balance selection
  • Picture Control settings explained – Standard, Neutral, Vivid & Monochrome
  • Dust Removal explained – Automatic / manual sensor cleaning modes 
  • Use of the new radio controlled iTTL flash system using the new SB5000
Required Equipment

If you own a Nikon D500 please feel free to bring this along.

Although you will provided course notes on a PDF at the end of the course, it is advised that you bring a pen and paper to make your own notes, this will greatly aid you in recalling what you have learnt throughout the day.

Required Skill Level

Basic understanding of photography and a DSLR camera.
