The new Contemporary range keeps up with Sigma’s renowned Art series of lenses due to the inclusion of several special elements. These include three FLD glass elements, two SLD glass elements, and two moulded glass aspherical elements.

Reduced flare and ghosting

From early in the design process Sigma engineered the 6mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary Lens to show highly controlled flare and ghosting, which includes the addition of the effective Super Multi-Layer Coating. A lens hood is also included to help control light when shooting backlit subjects.

Bright aperture prime

A bright prime lens is the ideal way to experience the essence of the art of photography. Simply select a focal length that matches the image and enjoy complete control of the depth of field. Our Verdict

With a host of existing Sigma lenses and decades of optical experience the engineers at Sigma are busy redesigning their line-up taking into account the shorter flange distance found in mirrorless cameras. They have also redesigned the focus system to cater for the growth in video, with fast and silent stepping motor designs. This has culminated in lenses like this 16mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary Lens for Canon EF-M which combines a lightweight and compact design with highly refined results. Image resolution is high with plenty of sharp details found throughout the aperture range. Several special lens elements help combat various aberrations and other artefacts resulting in extremely well controlled images which also show minimal ghosting and flare.

A bright aperture allows users to shoot throughout low light situations handheld and also to experiment with depth of field on their subjects. The focal width is one of the most popular prime lengths for a wide angle due to its versatility which is reinforced by a close minimum focus distance of 25cm. Topping off a list of positive attributes you’ll find is a fast and silent focus system, which helps photographers and videographers gain rapid acquisition of their subjects together with well controlled focus breathing for video focus pulls.
