Atomos Shinobi 7” Monitor Summary

Atomos are on a roll with this Shinobi 7 HDMI/SDI HDR Monitor-only, following hot on the heels of the previously announced Ninja V+ monitor-recorder. The Shinobi 7 is a 1920 x 1200 HD 7-inch monitor, which follows on from its smaller sibling, the extremely popular 5-inch Shinobi.

Not only is the newer Shinobi 7 larger, but features an ultra-bright daylight viewable 2200 Nits brightness, HDMI/SDI cross conversion and camera control with HDMI 2.0 support for 4K/60p.

External video monitors are predominantly aimed at videographers who want a larger screen with video tools and don’t need extra video recording options. We are also finding a growing number of photographers using an external monitor for the bright viewing they offer with improved composing of their images, particularly for landscapes, architecture, interiors and product photography.

Atomos Shinobi 7” 4K HDMI HDR Photo And Video Monitor In More Detail

BIG, Bright and Beautiful Screen

The Shinobi 7 offers the expansive screen of the Shogun 7 with a lighter Monitor-only function of the original Shinobi weighing 577g (excluding batteries). With a calibrated peak brightness of 2200 Nits, the Shinobi 7 can be used in the brightest environments without a sun hood or for conversion of Log inputs for HDR monitoring. With the big, bright and beautiful display configuration options are endless, providing an ideal director or focus puller monitor, program or preview display for video switchers and the perfect view for vloggers presenting to camera.

Camera controls at your fingertips

Control your favourite cameras with the intuitive touchscreen, designed to provide fast access to the most important camera features. Whilst focusing on the image you can make dynamic adjustments of iris, white balance, shutter angle and ND. With the optional Atomos USB-C to serial cable, support is available out the box for the Z Cam E2 series camera, providing direct control of all the menu configurations. The additional USB and RJ45 control ports on the Shinobi 7 also provide support for future developments, with more options being added for camera control.

HDR in the field

The Shinobi 7 screen displays a broad 10+ stops of dynamic range in real time from Log/PQ/HLG signals. Combined with Atomos unique HDR monitoring features, the Shinobi 7 simplifies the complexities of shooting Log and HDR, helping to replicate post-production workflows at the moment while shooting. With Adaptive Cooling you can also prioritise reduced fan noise or peak display brightness.

Built in 3D LUT box

In addition to Log to HDR conversions you can also use your own custom 3D LUT to feed downstream to other devices or live feed. Load up to eight custom LUTs at any time via the SD Card Slot and instantly select between them. When using selfie mode, the large display acts as a perfect confidence monitor that allows you to apply a LUT to your camera output for a perfect piece to camera.

The best of AtomOS 10

Shinobi 7 utilises the fast and intuitive AtomOS 10 platform and is packed with an extensive suite of scopes and simple one-touch operations. Shinobi includes monitoring tools for focus, framing and exposure, including Focus Peaking, Focus Assist edge sharpening, 4:1 / 2:1 / 1:1 Zoom punch in, Zebra, False Color, Cine and social frame guides, SMPTE Safe Area, Waveform, RGB parade, vectorscope, anamorphic de-squeeze and 3D LUT support.

Atomos Analysis mode

With the new Analysis feature you can simultaneously see what you are shooting, view a waveform, histogram and vector scope, to ensure complete control of your image. You can even switch between different waveform, histogram and vector scope options on the fly with a single touch.

Streaming

The optional Atomos Connect 4K converts the Shinobi 7’s HDMI output to USB, giving a plug and play UVC (USB Video Class) output for streaming on a computer. Deliver professional cinematic looks with ease and bring professional production values to video conferences.

Continuous Power

With dual battery slots for NPF L series batteries including the Sony NP-F970 you can easily hot-swap batteries during your shoot and never be caught without power. The Shinobi was designed from the ground up to optimise battery usage while monitoring, as the dual slots combine to allow you to run all day. The dedicated locking DC jack input connects to mains power on-set and can be used with the optional DC to DTAP cable with V-lock batteries for power in the field.

Pro I/O and Cross conversion

With support for up to 4K/60p via the HDMI inputs the Shinobi 7 cements itself into any video workflow by enabling cross conversion between 4K HDMI and 3G-SDI signals. Output low-latency video signals, with the ability to bring HDMI cameras into SDI workflows or vice versa without the need for additional convertors.

Factory and User calibration

The Shinobi 7 is factory calibrated for Rec.709 and also supports user-calibration via the free Atomos Calibration software, as monitors can drift over time. Using the optional USB-A or USB-C to Serial cable and X-Rite’s i1Display Pro / i1Display Pro Plus, the calibration software easily automates the calibration of the screen to ensure accurate and reliable monitoring results.

Our Verdict

Atomos has been working hard to launch a series of new monitors and recorders for the growing video market and this trend continues with the Shinobi 7” monitor-only. There’s a huge desire for videographers to simply get a bigger, brighter and beautiful HDR image of what they’re shooting, but the Shinobi 7 packs a whole lot more than a daylight viewable monitor. Users also get the ability to control camera settings, load LUT’s and use a host of screen tools including focus assist tools, Safe Area with social screen sizes, waveform and a number of others.

With HDMI 2.0 comes 4K/60p support as well as cross conversion between 4K HDMI and 3G-SDI signals, ideal for productions which might have multiple cameras for example. If you’re a director or focus puller the Shinobi 7’s 1920 x 1200 resolution with ultra bright 2200 Nits in Rec.709 will be most welcome, as will the 10+ stops of dynamic range. Photographers can also benefit from a screen of this quality, with far more visible in the frame at a larger size than any camera LCD or EVF is capable of displaying. Another user-group who can benefit from this HDR monitor are vloggers who shoot pieces to camera, particularly as up to eight custom LUT’s can be loaded, so you’ll get a clear, large selfie screen which reflects the end result closely.
