Sony a6500 Features in Detail

Image Stabilisation

Sony a6500 Compact system

The a6500 is the first Sony APS-C sensor camera to feature their acclaimed 5-axis optical in-camera image stabilisation, which offers the equivalent exposure compensation of using a shutter speed 5 stops slower, opening up amazing opportunities to shoot in low light or active and moving situations, this also helps to smooth out video when shooting handheld. The stabilisation works with a variety of lenses as well, including E-mount lenses that don't have Optical Steady Shot stabilisation and even A-mount lenses when used with an adaptor.

Autofocus

Sony a6500 Compact system

The autofocus speed in the a6300 was truly impressive and the a6500 is no different; with a record breaking acquisition time of as quick as 0.05 seconds, the 4D Focus AF system combines high speed phase detection autofocus with extremely accurate contrast autofocus. Where the a6500 stands out against the a6300 though is with the addition of a new front-end LSI chip which opens up the buffer for high-speed continuous shooting to capture an impressive 307 frames, meaning you've got even more chance to get the right shot.

Touchscreen Autofocus

Sony a6500 Compact system

An all new feature on the a6500 is the touch screen auto-focus, which lets you tap to lock focus on a subject, but where this feature really comes into its own is when you've got the camera held up to your eye looking through the viewfinder you can drag a finger across the touchscreen like a touchpad to move the autofocus point live in the viewfinder, while shooting.

Image Sensor

The a6500 delivers an impressive ISO sensitivity of 100-51,200 thanks to a combination of the newly developed front-end LSI chip, the powerful BIONZ X image processor and the 24.2MP EXMOOR CMOS imaging sensor.

4K Video

Sony a6500 Compact system

For video shooters, the a6500 is invaluable, with 4K internal movie recording on a full-pixel readout without pixel-binning. The camera records full sensor width footage at 6K and then oversamples the information to deliver high quality 4K footage with excellent depth and detail.

Combined with touchscreen autofocus and the drag-to-focus feature, video recording on the a6300 is an immersive experience, and with Full HD at 100fps at up to 100mpbs as well as slow and quick modes for frame rates of 1 fps to 100 fps, as well as S-Log gamma recording and S-Gamut for a wider colour space, the a6500 is an excellent mirrorless camera for video.

Ergonomics

Even though Sony have managed to squeeze a new 5-axis image stabilisation system into the a6500, the body is only slightly larger than its predecessor, the a6300. Ergonomically there have been several improvements to the a6500, most notably several features borrowed from the a7 II range, including a robust lens mount, a recessed grip, a larger shutter release button, ten custom buttons, improved feel for the mode and control dials and rear buttons, and even a softer eyepiece cup for a more comfortable experience.

As expected, the a6500 also features Wi-Fi, QR and NFC compatibility and offers location data acquisition via a Bluetooth connection to a mobile device.

Our Verdict

The a6500 is a category leading camera whether you're a stills photographer or video shooter.

The introduction of a 5-axis in-body image stabilisation system means the camera has excellent low-light performance with up to 5 stop shutter speed equivalent compensation. The stabilisation also means that recording 4K video will be smooth and stable.

The new touchscreen in the a6500 and the ability to tap-to-focus as well as drag-to-focus means that focusing is an absolute breeze.

The new front-end LSI chip gives the a6500 huge buffering capabilities, where it's now able to shoot 307 frames in a single burst at up to 11fps.

Building on the success of the a6300 and its World's fastest autofocus system, the a6500 offers the same amazingly fast autofocusing with a combination of phase detection and contrast detection.

The improved ergonomics in the form of a recessed grip, larger and more buttons, and improved dials and controls, alongside the speed performance means the a6500 is a fast, small, connected mirrorless camera with the freedom and creativity that interchangeable lenses offers.
