Olympus OM-D E-M1 MK III Mirrorless Camera Body
Olympus OM-D E-M1 MK III Mirrorless Camera Body summary
The new and improved Olympus OM-D E-M1 MK III comes with a host of upgraded features to fit a wide variety of photography applications. Serious amateurs and professionals will make use of the 20.4 Megapixel Live MOS sensor, which combines with a new TruePic IX processor for ever faster operation than the previous well regarded OM-D E-M1 Mark II mode. The new processor delivers a resoundingly quick 18fps AF/AE tracking continuous shooting, ideal for fast moving subjects seen in sports or wildlife.
Image stabilisation has also been updated, currently providing a world leading 7.5 EV stops of compensation when combined with compatible Olympus lenses, such as the ED 12-100mm f/4 IS PRO. A host of other useful features include 50MP Handheld High Res Shot for capturing high-resolution shots without the need of a tripod, working seamlessly with the image stabilisation. Olympus have also developed their Tripod High Res Shot function which can be used with Raw and JPEG images, for photographers mounting the body onto a tripod. Still images can now be captured at up to a hugely detailed 80 Megapixel equivalent. This is ideal for still life, architectural, product and interior applications.
The autofocus system has also been upgraded with extremely accurate 121-point all cross-type On-chip Phase Detection AF sensor. This allows for large frame coverage, perfect for both moving and still subjects. AF/AE tracking can be used in conjunction with 18fps continuous shooting, using either the rear LCD screen or viewfinder. 4K video at 30p is included, together with slow motion full HD at up to 120fps. The highly weather sealed body allows outdoor photographers to continue shooting in virtually any extreme conditions.
The TruePic IX processor brings extremely fast performance to the OM-D E-M1 MK III, not simply improving start-up times, but also faster, more accurate autofocusing. The 20.4MP micro four thirds sensor has plenty of resolution for high-quality prints and for cropping into images. Olympus have further enhanced the new body with class leading image stabilisation, working together with lenses for an advantage not available with any other system. This is ideal for low light and hand held photography of all styles as well as the 50MP high resolution handheld mode.
The magnesium alloy body has been thoughtfully re-designed and carefully weatherproofed, feeling very familiar to previous Olympus users. Ergonomics are improved with a deep grip and easy to control buttons, together with the fully articulated screen and AF point joystick. The tilting rear touchscreen is essential for certain stills and video recording including for Youtube content creation.
The AF system delivers wide coverage with 121-points working seamlessly with compatible lenses, with each AF point easily selected either through the viewfinder or easily with the rear touchscreen. Automatic focus modes have been included for a variety of situations, including Face Priority/Eye Priority AF, Starry Sky AF, lending advanced options to a host of shooting styles.

Olympus OM-D E-M1 MK III Mirrorless Camera Body in detail
Olympus brings a highly refined workhorse body into the range of micro four thirds cameras which can be used in a host of shooting situations. The 20.4 Megapixel Live MOS sensor and new TruePic IX processing engine provide the highest quality images and video possible from the Micro Four Thirds format.
The highly capable, magnesium alloy body is dust, splash and freeze proofed for use in a variety of environments. The DSLR-like layout features a blend of manual controls, with all exposure settings easily at hand. Exposure settings and menu items can be accessed through the 3 inch rear, Vari-angle touchscreen LCD, further enhancing the operation of the camera.
A 5-axis image stabilisation system has been included, which uses sensor shift to provide 5.5 EV steps of compensation or 7.5 with compatible M.Zuiko lenses. This provides the world's highest stabilisation on any system at launch. The feature can be used in both live view and through the viewfinder, with different stabilisation modes available including five-dimensional, vertical or horizontal activation and automatic. The system will allow stills and video to be captured in dark locations, with precise focusing while handheld, as with super telephoto photography. Compatible lenses with built-in image stabilisation further extend the amount of compensation available.
A TTL phase detection and contrast detection system have been added to the mix, which allow for 121 AF points, with a variety of selection modes. A cross-type On-chip Phase Detection AF sensor provides not only faster operation, but also 75% vertical and 80% horizontal coverage of the frame, ideal for capturing fast-moving objects. Continuous shooting is available up to 18fps, with a new multi selector joystick for easy AF point selection.
Automatic focusing includes a wealth of features for intelligently detecting many types of subjects. Face Priority/Eye Priority AF is faster and more accurate due to the speedier processor and improved AF algorithms. Now capable of detecting eyes and small faces accurately in both stills and video mode. Also included for automatic detection are the Starry Sky AF and the SSWF (Super Sonic Wave Filter) making sure the sensor is dust free at all times.
Video recording includes 4k at 30p through to ultra high speed 120fps in Full HD. This enables video content creators to choose the precise settings for each project, with consistently professional results. Image stabilisation works with video for extra smooth shots when handheld.
The Olympus OM-D E-M1 MK III comes with a variety of ways to process images in camera. Images can be finalised with a variety of renditions, which include Sepia, Black & White, e-Portrait and trimming, while art filters can be applied like Vintage, Grainy Film and Pop Art.
Connectivity has also been included with Wi-Fi support, seamlessly linking to a smart phone with the OI.Share smartphone app. USB and micro HDMI can also be used for remote control of the camera, along with easy transfer of data. A 3.5mm microphone jack and Earphone jack have been included for further monitoring of audio.
With Olympus’ advanced SSWF (Super Sonic Wave Filter) technology (which vibrates the image sensor filter with an acceleration of several thousand G 30,000 times per second to powerfully shake off dust and dirt) and a new sensor coating introduced with the OM-D E-M1X, dirt cannot stick to the sensor, reducing spots in images to 1/10th of that in conventional models. The high-durability shutter unit in the E-M1 Mark III clears 400,000 operation tests and therefore offers a high level of reliability.
