Fujifilm X-pro3 Mirrorless Camera Body Dura Black Finish Summary

The 2019 Fujifilm X-Pro3 body has been announced complete with numerous upgrades for Fujifilm-X photographers. This upgrade begins with an all-new body design, which is finished in this stylish DuratectTM surface-hardening technology for extra toughness in this premium Dura Black finish. Constructed with a combination of titanium and magnesium alloy, the chassis maintains a compact lightweight form at just 447g (without battery), whilst now being one of the most durable cameras in its’ class. Weather sealing has also been applied at 70 key points to the new casing, which further improves all-weather capabilities for outdoor photographers.

The upgraded body now employs the high quality back illuminated 26.1MP X-Trans CMOS 4 sensor first seen in the X-T3 and X-T30. This sensor compliments the excellent range of Fujinon X-mount lenses, drawing out detailed, high contrast, and sharp images as one has come to expect from the flagship model. The X-Pro3 has also been re-engineered to be one of the most durable camera bodies available today, with the use of titanium for exterior parts. This gives the structure which is also made from magnesium, an outstanding strength to weight ratio, keeping the system compact yet incredibly strong. With weather sealing now applied at 70 key points, Fuji has also advanced dust and moisture resistance considerably in this version.

As Fuji’s flagship stills photography camera from Fujifilm's X Series line-up, the X-Pro series is extremely popular with both enthusiasts and professional photographers. However, as seen with previous firmware updates, the X-Pro series are entering the realm of hybrid cameras, sporting both 4K and HD video options. This is continued with the X-Pro3 which features high quality 4K at 30p and full HD movies at up to 120p high speed recording. No longer are the X-Pro solely for stills.

There are several other significant enhancements to both the design and usability of the new body, starting with the addition of a rear mounted Electronic Range Finder. This places a new customisable colour LCD conveniently on the rear panel for users to see their camera settings. The LCD allows photographers to concentrate on the view through the updated high resolution EVF, as well as to now easily glance down at their settings. This is a first for a rangefinder-style camera and sets the tone for the numerous X-Pro3 feature updates. The rear screen can be tilted 180 degrees to show the camera live view, presenting an easy alternative to the EVF for those who prefer a rear screen, or are shooting at difficult angles.

This upgraded model is host to the high quality and higher resolution back illuminated 26.1MP X-Trans CMOS 4 sensor first seen in the X-T3 and X-T30. This sensor compliments the excellent range of Fujifilm X-mount lenses, capturing detailed, high contrast, and sharp images as one has come to expect from the flagship model. As the Fuji flagship stills photography camera, the X-Pro series is extremely popular with both enthusiasts and professional photographers, however videographers will not be disappointed with the quality of movie recording the X-Pro3 is capable of, straight out of the box. This version features 4K video at a respectable 30p and full HD movies at up to 120p high speed recording, for slow motion and special effects. This leads the way for X-Pro bodies to move into hybrid camera territory.

The 3.69 million dot resolution EVF has been also been updated and now offers an incredibly bright 1500cd/m2, along with a high contrast ratio of over 1:5000. The refresh-rate is also quick, and boasts 100% coverage as well as 97% Adobe sRGB colour coverage allowing photographers to see more colours. The EVF also offers a boost function for smooth, higher speed refresh rates, giving an effective rate of 200fps. This is ideal for fast moving or erratic subjects. Switching between optical view and electronic view is simple, allowing users to choose instantly between zero lag and electronic information overlay.

Fujifilm’s renowned 91 point autofocus system has also been updated with an Intelligent Hybrid AF enabling down to -6EV phase detection. This allows photographers to acquire subjects in near complete darkness when using the XF 35mm f/1.4 lens. Fuji have also significantly speeded up continuous shooting and buffer speeds over the previous generation. We now see up to 11 frames per second using mechanical shutter with 145 JPG or 42 compressed RAW file buffering. For photographers happy to shoot in electronic shutter mode the new model is capable of a very respectable 30fps.

A new 'CLASSIC Neg' film simulation has been added to the popular list of simulations, which include Velvia and Provia staples. The new addition simulates colour negative film that was used for everyday snapshots back in the day. Other welcome updates include the addition of an HDR function for high dynamic range scenes, such as landscapes and interiors. New auto bracketing and auto blending of up to nine exposures are also available, assisting photographers with capturing excellent images straight out of camera.

Our Verdict

The X-Pro series are extremely popular and have a dedicated following of pro and enthusiast photographers. The combination of classic rangefinder-style body, compact form, Fuji image science and intuitive usability have all been enhanced with the X-Pro3. The compact, robust body now comes in this beautiful premium Dura Black finish, has even better weather sealing and now offers a rear-screen LCD displaying camera settings.

Adding in the higher resolution APS-C CMOS 4 sensor, improved handling and functionality together with an all round faster camera, makes a significant and very appealing upgrade. New shooting features and high quality video will also be most welcome to new and existing Fujifilm X-mount photographers.
