Colour Filters

colour graduated filter

A Colour filter, in photography, will absorb light of a certain colour when entering the camera’s lens. In colour photography, this will result in a colour cast to the image. In black and white photography, using a red filter, for example, will increase the contrast in the image.

Solid colour filters will add the cast over the entire image, whereas a graduated filter of different colours will create a gradient of that colour across the image – these are often used by landscape photographers to enhance or reduce colours over certain parts of an image, such as the blue in a sky or green in a field.
